Look closely at the cover. You will see a small slot. Insert a small flat blade screwdriver, and pry it off. Very easy..

SOURCE: How to read trouble codes on 1998 Toyota Camry w/o scan tool

You can go to any auto parts store and they will usually read them for you for free. Around the late 90s many of the auto computer systems began requiring scan tools rather than the older method of simply flashing lights on the dash if you jumpered the correct pins.

1998 toyota camry over heating and then the check engine light came on?

When your engine gets warm pop your hood and check to see if your fans are coming on. If they are not Then i think that would be your over heating problem.

My 1988 toyota camry: airconditioner/heat doesn't work

The heater may not work because of a bad thermostat, low coolant, or a bad sensor at the engine. It can also be a bad resistor valve under the dash. The resistor valve is connected to a wire plug on the blower motor under the dashboard. It needs to be replaced. Th AC may need to be refilled with refrigerant or the compressor may be bad.
