SOURCE: adding transmission fluid to 1992 BMW 525i.

On the driver side of the transmission pan there is a fill plug. The car must be in the air and level. With the car running fluid will run out of the plug hole when it is full. This is no fun without a lift.

SOURCE: where do i find the transmission dipstick at

There isn't one. To check the transmission fluid level there is a plug that you must remove. The fluid should be to the level of the threads. 1997 528i drives only in low gear

I would have a transmission shop diagnosis. If it isn't shifting out of first, then you most likely have a fault in the transmission electronics.

Transmission light is on in the bmw 528i

add transmission fluid. DOT 4 is reverse compatible with DOT 3. the car must be at running temp to do this. the car must be running to add fluid. the car must be level to do this. The new fluid must be pumped in. That being said......the local quick lube place is the best place to go. Too many people crush themselves under a running car to safely do it themselves.

1997 528i doesn't shift between 1st and 2nd but if I shift to S3 and back to Drive it shifts

Hi,
I had the same problem with my 1997 528i also. After doing a little research and talking to some mechanics that told me to replace the neutral safety switch located on the side of the transmission. I got the switch from BMW dealer and it cost around $300. After installing it the transmission shifted like new.

I have BMW 528i 99 with a transmision problem when the car is about 30 miles and is chanchaging from 1 to 2, it get freewheel. Any idea???????

low fluid.

no dipstick. sealed unit. GM4L30E transmission. drop the two pans, replace the filter. fill the pans with fluid, re-attach pans, pump fluid into upper fill hole when it is at operating temp and level. when it starts to dribble out of the fill hole at operating temp and car is level.....you've go enuf fluid in it.
