My car cut off while driving. wouldnt start back up. check the gas line to the engine and no gas is coming through. what could be my problem and do i fix it

its the fuel pump going bad and also your fuel filter might need a new filter because if the fuel filter is plugged up to the point that the fuel pump is working too hard to try to pump the gasoline through the filter and can destroy the fule pump so if there is no gasoline coming through the gas lines that means check for filter and pump. Usually some times you can hear the fuel pump working on some models like a humming sound in the back of car.

This could be your first step:
One of the first things that you should do is check to see if the fuel pump is running. You can do this by opening the gas cap and putting your ear close to it and having someone turn the ignition switch on. If you hear a loud hum then it is presumed to be working. If you don't hear the humming sound it doesn't mean the pump isn't working. It could be that there is built-up pressure of fuel in the line and the inline fuel filter is plugged. Turn off the key, remove the fuel filter that is mounted to the frame along the left rear side of frame. Place a metail container under the fuel line when removing it from filter. Turn on the ignition momentarily to confirm the fuel pump does pump fuel in to container. Install new fuel filter, turn on ignition, wait for fuel to come up to engine (4 or 5 seconds)and then crank engine over. If it starts your fuel line was plugged at the filter. If it doesn't start, your injectors could be plugged and fuel will not atomize properly. Have the vehicle towed in to sevice garage and have the entire fuel system tested and the injectors ultrasonically cleaned. You should use a fuel system cleaner like STP or GUMOUT fuel injector and system cleaner that you add to your fuel tank, so you can clean the tank, lines, and injectors as you drive.
That is a start, Good luck!! EJ Kudelka

There is no gas getting to the engine but there is gas getting past the filter

Turn the key to the 'On' position, but don't start the vehicle.

Do you hear a whirring noise coming from behind, or underneath you? If you do, then the fuel pump is working, or should be. There should be a whirring noise for a few seconds when you do this.

The way the fuel system works on this vehicle is that when you turn the key to the 'On' position, it should start pumping fuel to the engine. But it is not pumping the fuel directly into the engine, it is just pumping enough fuel to generate pressure in the fuel lines. The fuel comes back to the gas tank from the engine due to that pressure.

I would recommend that you get a Haynes Manual #24071 for your vehicle and look up the section on the Fuel Line. There is a way to test the pressure without removing the hoses/pipes which go to the engine.

Hope this helps.

92 GMC Jimmy Replaced fuel pressure and fuel filter, changed spark plugs and wires , no fuel pressure at valve, car will crank for 2-3 seconds then go dead

if you say you replaced the fuel pressure ? "regulator or pump" that was not very clear as to which so i am guessing and the filter but have no fuel to the fuel bar valve either you have no power to the pump or a clogged fuel line or a blown fuse or a short in the power suppluy to the fuel pump if you turn the key to on position without cranking it do you hear a slight humming noise if so the fuel pump is working ..if you do now hear this chances are as i stated above
the use of a test light is required to check for power to the pump as wel do you smell any gas =fuel lines are rotted .let ne know what you discover and check all your fuses

The fuel filter may be dirty and not permitting the proper fuel flow, or the Fuel pump may have gone bad. If you turn the ignition on with the window open or your standing out side you should hear the fuel pump pressurize the fuel line for 3 seconds. If you think you didn't hear it you can try  again. If you do not hear it check the fuses to the ECM and Fuel pump. The fuel pump relay is in the glove box behind a panel that say relays. there are three of them, switch the relays around to make sure the relay did not go bad and i think the middle relay is the one for the fuel pump. The last thing would be to check is the fuel pressure, there should be 60 to 65 PSI when the system is pressurized and you can check that at the shredder valve on the fuel line towards the rear of the engine on the drivers side.
Ok lets recap, Check and listen for the fuel pump, if you can not hear it check the fuses and relays. oh and almost forgot there is a wire harness from the frame to the gas tank on the drivers side that may also be corroded, check for loose connection.
If you can hear the fuel pump, change the fuel filter and check the fuel pressure at the shredder valve, your going to have to rent a fuel pressure gauge to connect to the shredder valve. IF you want to save some money, just change the filter and if that did not help then check the fuel pressure.
Good luck and keep me posted

Fuel pump not pumping

You can Hear fuel running? Where in the tank? If so then it sounds like the fuel pump dettached from the supply line inside the tank.
