Question about Mercury Sable
These two hoses are called the EGR backpressure transducer hoses and need to be replaced with the same type to reduce the risk of fire also you may need a new sensor as some of the newer ones are plastic and melt with the hoses have a back pressure test done on the catalytic converter to make sure you dont have excessive exhaust burning these hoses also there is a small check valve or orifice in the metal tube assembly that the hoses connect to that could be faulty and caused the hoses to melt

I was looking under the hood, and noticed that i could hear air rushing around. I found that a vacum hose had decayed and cracked. After i replaced that, everything has been fine

My 2000 Sable starts blowing hot air about every 6 months. I mean like an oven. All I do is disconnect the battery negative terminal for about 5 minutes. After I re-connect the problem is solved. This solves many problems on this car, it just needs a re-boot. It must be powered by Microsoft (ha ha). Good luck. ps my auto headlamps never did work right either. Dave.

Barring any vacuum leaks, P0401 is indicative of a bad EGR valve. Hope this answers your question. Best of luck.
