These two hoses are called the EGR backpressure transducer hoses and need to be replaced with the same type to reduce the risk of fire also you may need a new sensor as some of the newer ones are plastic and melt with the hoses have a back pressure test done on the catalytic converter to make sure you dont have excessive exhaust burning these hoses also there is a small check valve or orifice in the metal tube assembly that the hoses connect to that could be faulty and caused the hoses to melt

SOURCE: 2000 MERCURY SABLE

My 2000 Sable starts blowing hot air about every 6 months. I mean like an oven. All I do is disconnect the battery negative terminal for about 5 minutes. After I re-connect the problem is solved. This solves many problems on this car, it just needs a re-boot. It must be powered by Microsoft (ha ha). Good luck. ps my auto headlamps never did work right either. Dave.

SOURCE: mercury sable 2001 duratec engine DOHC I get check engine light and diagnostic code PO401". Any suggestions?

Barring any vacuum leaks, P0401 is indicative of a bad EGR valve. Hope this answers your question. Best of luck.

Missing an air hose that goes from the air breather to ? what is it called?

if its about as big as your little finger in diameter it may be but if its an inch or larger its a manifold heat tube that comes up from the exhaust shroud on the header pipe which is used to preheat air on really cool days.. its usually around a foot long and flexible(bendable) and made from flexhose..parts store sells by the foot if needbe..its like an exhaust patch..they will know when you tell what car it is..(normally)

When heater is on coolant leaks

There is no way of guessing which one is leaking but the best thing to do is replace both as if one has failed the other one won't be far behind. the other thing to think about is did they tighten the clamps properly when the fitted the heater core? I would suggest new stainless steel hose clamps also to replace the factory items.,

Question - I may have a transmission fluid problem. but where is the dipstick on my 2000 mercury sable?

look on the backside of the engine near the firewall. Slightly under behind the intake plenum where the throttle body is you will see the dipstick near the coolant hoses.

1989 Mercury Sable, 3.0L V-6, Auto Trans. Engine Idles at about 2000 RPM.

Check your vacuum hoses (They are 3/8" Rubber hosing on the right side of the engine, you will need to remove the air intake piping (Also remove the throttle body to make accessing them easier) This is the #1 cause of high idling in the 3.0 OHV and 3.0 DOHC sable engines.
