You have to drop the tank. Should be two straps under the vehicle holding the tank up. Then you will need some quick connect fuel tools to unhook the lines. Unhook the fuel fill hose. Then it is a matter of a couple of electrical snaps. Take ring off top of sending unit and pull it out.

Your sending unit for the guage is part of your fuel pump in the tank. But first try your fuel pump relay, may be working intermittenly when you hit a bump or something. Or possibly a loose wire somewhere along the way. Much less expensive (worth a look).

Gas hand not working flip flopping

GM has been having problems with the wiper on the gas sending unit in the tank. After years of use it wears through and only works once in a while. Unfortuneately you have to drop the tank to fix it. Fortuneately they have started selling just the replacement sending unit, you used to have to buy the fuel pump and all.

you have to remove the fuel tank and remove fuel pump module assembly.first before you can replace fuel level sending unit.

The cause of this problem in this model is that the gas gage sending unit is defective, so yes it is fixable, to replace the sending unit requires the fuel tank be removed from the truck

Gas gauge flucuates to empty and full so we never know if we have enough gas. What to do?

It is a common problem. It is a faulty in tank sender. You can just replace the sending unit by removing tank.
