1998 Isuzu Bighorn, 3.1 DTI. Low oil pressure.

I have low oil pressure, I have flushed engine, and replaced oil and filter. This made a marginal improvement.Oil pressure drops as engine revs increase. Is this a worn oil pump problem? what is involved in replacing it? where can I find manual for this job? Thanks to all who can help.

Sounds like a clogged pickup screen. Take oil pan off and check the screen.

SOURCE: 1999 bravada oil

check for coolant in the oil. remove the oil fill cap and look for a white milky substance. most likely engine damage has already occured because to have that low if oil pressure there is too much "clearance" between the bearings and the components they work with-(crankshaft,camshaft,connectiong rods). that vehicle came with dexacool coolant and it would shorten the life of the intake gaskets. they then would leak into the engine ruining the bearings over time. the skip can happen from lifters hydrolocked with the oil/coolant solution. take it to a reputable mechanic for an analysis......Good luck.......Scott

Why does my MG ZT two litre diesel show low oil pressure and cuts out?

The engine is designed to cut out after a few seconds without oil pressure.
So you need to establish if it's a faulty signal, or really is low oil pressure.. Low oil pressure could be down to catastrophically low oil level - top it up to the upper mark IN STAGES, 1/2Litre at a time. Choked oil filter, jammed bypass valve, blocked strainer, can also all cause the problem - lack of maintenance? Have you recently used a flushing oil in an old engine?
Also using very thin oils e.g. 0W30, in a very worn engine, will not allow the pressure to build up.

Peugeot 308 low oil pressure and loss some power

Low oil pressure starts from oil pump sounds like its blocked either in the pump filter or galleries in the enging. I would first call the dealer and check what filter system is on the pump which may require removal of the sump to replace or clean.

I would certainly not use a car with this problem as it could well cause engine failure. Try a good quality flush first and run the car for 20 minutes minimum on tick over. Remove and put a good quality oil in and do another oil change again if required a month later with a flush to make sure the gunge is out.

If this does not help do an oil pressure test and see what it comes out at checking the manufacturers recommended pressures. If you have changed the oil, pump filters and done a second oil change and still get low pressure then you may well have a faulty pump.

I would also check the oil pressure switch to make sure it s not giving a false reading. The loss of power sounds like Turbo failure and again dirty oil to the Turbo oil feed pipes could be restricitng flow, hence why regular flushing oil and filter change is important.

I would get the Turbo checked out same time as on this model it could well be a Turbo and engine change if its gone that far due to the metal particles contaminating the engine.

My isuzu rodeo marks low oil pressure and also the gauge is low

Welcome to Fixya

Check the oil filter. A clogged oil filter can be the cause of low oil pressure. When the oil leaves the pump, it passes through the filter before going on to the bearings and oil galleys. Filters create a certain amount of resistance to flow that increases with the rate of flow. But as the filter becomes clogged with debris, the restriction created increases. It will reached to the point that there were no oil will pass through the filter element. To prevent such a blockage, a pressure relief valve located in the filter or where the filter mounts to the block is designed to open if the pressure differential across the filter exceeds a preset value (typically 5 to 40 psi). This allows the oil to bypass the filter and keep on flowing. But the engine's oil pressure will be reduced to that of the bypass valve. Replacing the filter should solve the problem.

Thank you for using Fixya!

My 1989 SAAB 9000 Oil pressure light came on just before I got home. Read that I should not drive with light on I started it a few days later and the light was off. How do I clean the engine?

1 - make sure there is enough oil in the engine to start with - you may just have low oil. 2 - the oil pressure switch could be faulty - any garage will test the switch for you for a small fee, best to know this before embarking on any repairs or remedies.

3- if you found that both of the above are ok then to clean the engineyou can use a proprietary engine flush such as wynns engine flush,
your local motor shop should have a few different types of engine flush. these here are what I would use as have always had good results. "Gunk" is another good buy but a little more expensive. The "flush" is poured in the engine same as oil and mixes with the oil, you run the engine for 5-20 minutes (as per instructions on the tin) at normal temperature and the oil and flush go round the system dissolving all manner of grime and varnish, burnt oil etc, you then drain the engine oil ,let the engine drip with the sump plug out for a good 20 minutes at least to get as much of the oil oil out as possible - if you disconnect the ignition coil (to prevent the engine starting) you can then crank the engine for a few seconds to empty the oil pump of any residual flush and oil. Now remove the old oil filter and fit the new one (take the rubber seal out of the new filter and wet it with fresh engine oil, then put the seal back into the groove on the filer and fit the filter to the engine) then refit the sump plug (with a new washer - auto shop £1 ) , fit the new oil filter and add new oil to the engine upto the FULL mark on the dipstick - start and run the engine - hopefully your low oil pressure condition is gone. If not youre looking at a worn oil pump or a generally worn engine - Low oil pressure in a high mileage engine is nothing to really worry about, but ZERO oil pressure is terminal
Oil for your car is 10w/40 -[part or fully synthetic (fully synthetic is better but more expensive)
The oil pressure switch (if faulty) can be obtained from most auto parts shops and maybe available from saab dealers parts desk (which is best option because you are sure to get the proper official part and not a cheap copy)
