Could be a bad purge valve on the vapor canister under the car by the fuel tank.

Common problem. Your engine is "flooding" (too much fuel). When the Evaporative Emissions Purge Control Valve (also known as purge control solenoid) sticks open, it allows the fuel vapor from the tank to be forced into the intake manifold on the engine when the vapor in the tank is displaced by the new fuel entering the fuel tank. This will cause the engine to start very hard (long crank) and when it does start, it will stumble and misfire for several seconds until the excessive fuel vapor has been cleared out.

If you scan your onboard Computer you will most likely get a code
P0441 "Evaporative Emission System Incorrect Purge Flow"

Your check engine light is most likely on. If it is not, it SHOULD be.

You may also get other codes such as P0455 "Evaporative Emission System Leak Detected (large leak)" or a P0457 "Evaporative Emission System Leak Detected (fuel cap loose/off)". If you do find these codes are present, I wouldn't worry too much about those because they can be caused by refueling your vehicle with the engine running. Simply clear all codes after replacing your purge control valve and everything should be OK.

Anyway, the purge control valve is located in the engine compartment and is not very hard to replace.

NOTE: DO NOT confuse the purge control valve with the canister vent control valve that is located at the REAR of the vehicle. I have seen many techs that do not know how these systems work that will replace the wrong valve and the customer is the one who ends up paying for it.

Have OBD codes P2A00, P0441, P0442, P0446 on my 2003 Highlander. Selling the car in a few months. Does this really need to be repaired before trade-in? Can I just erase the codes?


NOPE CANT ERASE CODES UNTIL THE PROBLEM IS FIXED OR THE SERVICE ENGINE LIGHT SOON WILL STAY ON. CODE PO441 - EVAPORATIVE EMISSION EVAP SYSTEM INCORRECT FLOW DETECTED.CHECK INTAKE VACUUM HOSE CONNECTIONS AT THE EVAP CANISTER PURGE VALVE.IF ALL IS GOOD.THE EVAP CANISTER PURGE VALVE COULD BE BAD. CODE PO 442 - EVAPORATIVE EMISSION EVAP SYSTEM SMALL LEAK DETECTED. EVAPORATIVE EMISSION SYSTEM LARGE LEAK DETECTED FUEL CAP LOOSE OR OFF MISSING. Code says evaporator purge solenoid


Which code specifically? Do not assume you need a new solenoid. Our recommendation will depend on the specific code and some troubleshooting results. I usually recommend checking over all the EVAP vacuum lines and the gas cap too whenever there is a purge valve code. Check the vacuum lines at the cannister in the left rear bumper. I will paste info on the purge solenoid below.

Evaporative Emission Purge Solenoid

Description & Operation
The duty cycle EVAP canister purge solenoid (DCP) regulates the rate of vapor flow from the EVAP canister to the intake manifold. The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) operates the solenoid.
During the cold start warm-up period and the hot start time delay, the PCM does not energize the solenoid. When de-energized, no vapors are purged. The PCM de-energizes the solenoid during open loop operation.
The engine enters closed loop operation after it reaches a specified temperature and the time delay ends. During closed loop operation, the PCM cycles (energizes and de-energizes) the solenoid 5 or 10 times per second, depending upon operating conditions. The PCM varies the vapor flow rate by changing solenoid pulse width. Pulse width is the amount of time that the solenoid is energized. The PCM adjusts solenoid pulse width based on engine operating condition.
Removal & Installation
The duty cycle evaporative (EVAP) canister purge solenoid is located in the engine compartment near the brake master cylinder.

  1. Disconnect electrical connector at solenoid.
  2. Disconnect vacuum lines at solenoid.
  3. Lift solenoid slot from mounting bracket for Removal & Installation.

To Install:
  1. Position solenoid slot to mounting bracket.
  2. Connect vacuum lines to solenoid. Be sure vacuum lines are firmly connected and not leaking or damaged. If leaking, a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) may be set with certain emission packages.
  3. Connect electrical connector to solenoid.

I checked the codes and one comes up its po446. i dont under stand what it mean so i cant fix it to get the light to go out.

At least the cap isn't loose for the gas tank.

I would clear the code with an OBD-II Scanner 'erase code' button, and see how long it takes for it to come back.

P0440,p0441,p0446


These codes are all for the Evaporative Emissions System.

P0440- Evaporative emissions system fault- just saying there's something wrong with the system.

P0441- Evaporative emissions system- Incorrect purge flow- saying that the system isn't purging the raw fuel vapors (hydrocarbons- HC) as well as it should.

P0446- Evaporative emissions system- Control valve circuit low- there is a valve, usually located on the charcoal canister at the rear of the vehicle, that opens to allow fresh air to enter the evaporative emissions system as the engine vacuum purges the fuel vapors from the charcoal canister and closes when purge is not needed to prevent leakage of those fuel vapors to the atmosphere (HC is a greenhouse gas and is regulated as such by the fed gov't).

Given that you have the incorrect purge flow code and the control valve code together, my bet is that the vent control valve has failed (causing the P0446) and is not opening to allow fresh air into the system to displace the air from within the system that is being pulled to the engine. Since you have no fresh air entering the system, the engine will pull a vacuum on the system instead of the vapors "flowing" into the engine (causing the P0441).
