A lot here depends on what make and year of car are----quite normal for 1000 in park but should be for most vehicles 6-7 hundred in drive etc.

What vehicle do you have? Is it worse after warm or better or ?

SOURCE: idle control

tps (throttle position sensor) controls the idle and the ideal idle is around 700-850

SOURCE: low idle stalls out

Here is the most common cause of surges and stalls at stops and low erratic idle speed and rough idle, it is the idle speed control air-bypass valve and throttle valve (IAC for short), they get full of gunk over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.

SOURCE: high idle

Clean the Idle Air Control Valve. It's on the throttle body below the Throttle Position Sensor. Worked for me! Good luck.

How to adjust idle

Should idle between 550 or 650 RPMs. If it wont stay running under 1000 RPMs there is something wrong. Idling at or above 1000 RPMs it' going to be slamming into forward and reverse.

High idle( 1000-1200mpr)

the most probable cause for high idle is the idle air control because this sets idle on todays cars. you could have a vacuum leak, but remove and clean IAC first. to see if it goes to the proper rpms. good-luck !
