Pulley diagram 2006 ford explorer

Chirping sound when car is idling and when you press the gas. Already replaced serpentine belt and idler pulley.

Go buy a Goodyear Gatorback serp belt that's what I did and now I don't have anymore chirping noise. Its a bit expensive but worth it. I bought the cheap belts in the past to save money.

SOURCE: serpentine belt diagram for my Ford V6 4.2L 97'

Lower left is the tensioner and above should the idler. Sometimes there is a diagram on the fan shroud or near the radiator. Without a picture I hope this makes sense.
Starting with the ac going over the top of its pulley and down to the power steering, to and under the crank shaft, going in and up and around left over the water pump to the tensioner (going under) and to the alternator over the top and then under the idler.

If you're sure its a belt noise then check idler pulley otherwise check diverter valve on side of motor

Intermittent chirping noise


I have had alot of customers with this problem. There is another pulley called the idler pulley and alot of times its bad due to the bearing wearing out. I would replace that 1st for around $20

Check the belt tensioner and the idle pulley... (looks just like the pulley on the tensioner, but bolts straight in.).. - from experience...my single pulley was bad... after replacing the tensioner TWICE... (duhh!!)

Hey there. I am replacing the serpentine belt on my 1997 Ford Taurus. The idle pulley bearings were shot, so the old belt actually slipped off. I am about to replace the idle pulley. I have loosened off...


This pulley should be spring loaded and you should have a diagram of the belt path on a label under the hood. There should be a square hole in the casting for a breaker bar or rachet to use as a lever to push or pull the pulley.

One of the secrets to installing the belt is not using the Idler pulley as the last pulley the belt attaches to. You are better off to use a stationary pulley in an easy to reach area as the last pulley to slip the belt over. In some cases you can just lean on the Idler pulley and press it down with the belt already over it. Then use the slack to slip the belt over another pulley, stationary, like the Alternator or water pump pulley.

If in doubt about out or in for the spring, just look at the diagram and see which side of the picture shows the belt looping around it. It (Idler pulley) is always suppose to push against the belt. If the belt runs to the right of the Idler, the spring pushes right. up to up, down to down, left to left. This means you get clearance by pushing the Idler in the opposite direction.

Try putting the belt on the alternator then slide it under the idler pulley last.

Welcome to the camshaft syncronizer. Sounds like a bad belt i bet. You need special tools and procedres to replace. Off to the repair shop you go.

If you have a book picture your are screwed. You do have a tensioner but it is between air con and powersteering pullys. In front from under you can put 15mm wrenchopend with a nother for leverage pull center bolt down to release tension. simple.
