Question about 2001 Mercury Sable

Why does my 2001 mercury sable die after it warms up and wont start until its cooled down again?

The rmp needle also goes crazy bouncing back and forth right before it dies. it also sputters once the rmp needle starts moving.

I had the same problem with my sable. You need a heater blend door. The one on your car is stuck and wore out. The replacement part costs about fifty-two dollars, labor will be more like about one hundred dollars if you take it to a dealership.good Luck

Could be cam sensor, crank sensor, PCM going bad. On these newer vehicles with all the electronics it is hard to pinpoint what it is till the check engine light does come on for it. I would suspect one of the 3 going bad though.

Sounds like you might have a stuck open EGR valve. Is the check engine light on. I would replace the fuel filter if it hasn't been replaced, also check the air filter.

SOURCE: 1999 Mercury Sable 24v OHC engine, starts normal

this is a difficult one..
check for vacuum leaks by possibly a visual inspection and then spraying starting fluid around hoses , intake and so on..if any change, you might have found a vacuum leak/bad gasket.
otherwise, DO clean the Idle Air Control Valve 1st.
then check and clean EGR valve next..

You will need to figure out if you are loosing spark or fuel when it will not start back up. Then you will know which system to troubleshoot.

the heat exchanger will do that ,, its normal and should only blow warm air for a minute or two, as long as it starts cooling again,, thats fine , and actually a Ford Motor Company trait

2 times now when my 2002 Mercury Sable was low on gas (about 1/8 tank) it died while driving. Both times while it was in the process of dying, it wasn't running rough or RPMs going crazy, the RPMs just...

Sounds like your gas guage isn't accurate. A fuel pump is not designed to draw fuel from the tank until it is completly dry. This is to avoid sucking up all the debris on the bottom of the tank.

Heater air flap stuck

My 01 sables blend door gets stuck I have learned that if you disconnect the battery for 5-10 minutes and reconnect the battery the blend door starts working again. It sounds crazy but it works

I have the same problem with my car..It is the speedo in the car that is bad...check into getting that replaced it should work fine after that.
