Youve got me here thats for sure ,old diesel man like myself and as this is a 97 then i wouldnt expect to find a lot of electronic gizmos.Only thing i can think of on the quick here is that their is a fuel pump in the tank and it should only run for a few seconds on start up to clear any air in the system and some reason its staying on all the time ,so check it out with a manual or look at the tank and see how many wires are running to the sensder unit in the tank ,if two wires then thats just the gauge but if two more heavier thicker cables then it has a fuel pump and if so disconnect them and try it without this pump running ,if it works then fit a non return valve in the feed pipe by the pump and this will stop the fuel running back ,just like the old motors i used to work on in the year dot .The fault is if iam correct is either a relay sticking or a faulty ECU ?? Sorry i cannot be more specific as havent done one as YET?? Now how about changing a clutch on 1962 land rover ?? i used to enjoy spending all day taking the floor out??

ITS GOT 2 WIRES GOING TO FUEL TANK SOMEONE SAID COULD BE FUEL FILTER HOUSING OR DRAGGING AIR FROM SOMEWERE

thats on the top of the tank ??? now follow the fuel line from the tank to see if it has a pump in the chassis somewhere ,if it runs ok as you say then its not drawing in air as this would result in bad starting and lack of power and iratic idle now black smoke ,this is caused by excess fuel and the only way for that would be a higher than required inlet fuel pressure causing overfueling ,quick test is remove the inlet pipe pipe from the filter and turn ignition on to see if fuel comes up on cranking engine ?? failing which make a gasket from a coca cola can and block off the EGR valve ,you know the thing that connects the exhaust manifold to the inlet manifold as this will cause lots of black smoke if clogged up and staying open

SOURCE: 1999 landrover range rover 2.5 diesel put petrol

I would start by looking for the valve on the fuel rail (or at the filter housing), if you disconnected the fuel pipe from the filter feed you will have a lot of air in the system (and diesels do not like air in the feul system) you will need to have someone crank the motor over while you push in on the schrader valve to release the air out of the system until you get fuel to flow steady out of that port (this may take a short period of time), then you should be able to start the vehicle... would also recommend replacing the fuel filter as well. Hope this helps.

You have a leak somewhere that is letting the fuel system **** in air. This is serious and needs to be taken care of immediately. Check all your lines and fittings for wet spots or signs of fuel leaking and repair. Also double check to make sure your new filter is on tight and no fittings have been put on crossthreaded. Hope this helps.

First things first, you need to check your fuel pressure AND flow. If you have damaged, or kinked fuel pipes you will have good pressure, but as you load the engine up (put your foot down) your flow is insufficient and you get lean misfire/overheating/cutting out. Bridge the fuel pump relay so you can run the pump without the engine. Get a large jug, suitable for catching fuel, open the fuel supply line and put the pump side in to your jug. Run the pump for 30 seconds, so long as the jug isn't filling up too fast. You should get a minimum of 2 litres of fuel, less and you have a restriction somewhere.

Jag X TYPE Diesel Black smoke coming from exhaust on acceleration

i had this problem and thought the fuel filter oil filter needed replacing so i have just had a service done but problem is still there but not as bad. been told it could be the AGR valve or a split pipe going to it which recuirculates unused fuel back to burn again. therefore unspent fuel is coming out of the exhaust causing the black smoke. i am still looking for the answer aswell, hope this helps.

Black smoke

black smoke and lack of power guessing its a diesel can be a cause of some simple items such as dirty/blocked air filter, dirty fuel filter if you check the air filter for cleansliness then change youre fuel filter and you then have the same symptoms you need to investigate injector/injection pump problems
ps check the air pipes to and from the airbox make sure they havent collapsed

assume diesel engine ? so if water was in fuel ? the engine would not run even b4 it got to engine because fuel filter would rstrict diesel due to water on filter element ? can i just say that from your symptoms ? black smoke/engine runs but poor ? the fact it is black smoke? is most due to lack of air flow to manifold remove air filter element and see if smoke clears? if element of filter has got wet ie floods? it will not allow air through? make sure there is no other restriction/s on filter inlet and outlet pipe to manifold espcially check now for any weakness on pipe to engine from filter ie when you rev up look to see if hose is sucking together due to vacuum created by revs of engine? if injectors were defect ? the smoke would be blue due to over fuel injection ie injectors not atomizing correctly ? i would suspect problem is lack of air? out of curiosity?? how did water enter fuel tank ?? if any more info you can provide it may give better idea of problem ?
