SOURCE: gear shift knob

Usually there is a small metal clip at the bottom front of the shift knob (looks like a staple.) Just pull it out and pull the knob straight up.

SOURCE: driver side mirror 2004 Pontiac Grand Am

On the inside trim, you can remove screws that are by the door handle, arm rest, under door and side of door and then gently pull back on the panel as there will also be retaining clips attached and you don't want to break them. You'll need to lift the door panel upwards in order to get it off the window ledge. Then you'll need to manipulate the panel and disconnect the door handle linkage from the door handle and disconnect the wiring for your controls. Then you can access the bolts that secure the mirror onto the door

Would a modulator valve on a 2004 grand am not go in reverse

2004 doesn't have a modulator valve . An if it did it would affect all gear operation , Shift hard , but would still go into gear. You have an internal transmission problem !

2004 pontiac grand prix reverse lights stay on while car is in drive?

This is can be a faulty reverse gear activation switch and can be confirmed if the lines to the reverse switch is removed or if the fault goes off when you are changing few times from the reverse to the first gear. If not check for short in the wiring harness or in the rear light assembly circuit.
You can disconnect the rear assembly and take a voltage check.

How to replace a gear shift assembly/solenoid on a pontiac 2004 grand am...can't find manual anywhere, and dealership wants to charge $400

I have no idea, Dawn, but apparently it's a couple hours worth of labor - at least according to my mechanic. One day my "traction control off" idiot light came on and I couldn't manually (via the on/off control button) turn the traction control back on. When I brought my 2004 Grand Prix to my mechanic he told me the part is fairly inexpensive (around $50 - meaning $25 for him) but the labor would be two hours. The reason this guy is my mechanic is that he doesn't rip me off. I may not always get a break, but he's honest. So... while your $400 at the dealership sounds kinda high... I'll be paying $300 at a private shop. (*SHRUG*)
