Starter cranks and cranks but no start. whats the problem?


Track the problem:Immo (immo light on the dash,key chip/chip antenna ring on the ignition barrel)Ceck spurkplugs/sparkplugs plugs/sparkplugs spark/wiring/ignition coil/coils.Ceck fuel,fuel delivery ,fuel pump/fuel pump relay.Ceck main fuse/relay under the hood.Ceck fuel lines/fuel filter/fuel in the tank.Hope u deal it,let the people know.

Hi Kenneth, Have the fuel pump output pressure checked. The pressure at the test point should be more than three bar (+43 lbs per square inch) A gentle trickle is not enough, it should be a fountain! (Always wear safety googles before testing) Make sure you've connected the delivery and return pipes correctly and the pipes are not crimped or bent causing a restriction. If all is okay maybe replace the pump again. Regards John

cud be worn timing chain--or failin ignition module/bad coil---wires wear inside and look good out--same as distributer cap-------fuel pressur and injectors may hav issue

Po104po105po1o6 misfires


First the po 171 is that bank 1 is running lean, as far as the codes po104-106, i think you made a mistake, the mifire codes for cylinders 4-6 would be po304, po305 and po306. the fiurst thing to check would the fuel preasure.

The reason i say fuel pressure is due to the misfiring and lean codes.
If the fuel pressure tests okay then check for intake manifold gasket leak, this is done with a smoke machine or with some throtle body cleaner spray. you will neeed to start the engine and spary around the intake gasket area as you watch for engine speed change.
A scan tool may be needed to watch fuel trim and o2 readings if the intake leak is small.
The other problem could be sparkplug failure or bad coil and last sparkplug wires if this is not a coil on plug system.
Acoil on plug system would be a system with out sparkplug wires going to each sparkplug, instead there is a separte coil on each sparkplug.
If this is a coil on plug ignition system i would start there and swap coils with the other cylinders and see if the misfire moves to those cylinder if it does then bad coils. hope this is helpful , good day

This is how your problem is solved in my shop. Out of the box, I'd say that you have a problem with the fuel management system. However, there's a good chance that it's something simple and inexpensive like a clogged fuel filter or water in the fuel tank.

First a little background for your edification. You may be aware of all this but we've never done business before and all assumptions are off the table.

For an engine - make that any engine and irrespective of manufacturer - to run, you need three things to happen inside the engine, compression, fuel and ignition, without any one of these components the engine will not run.
  • Compression - Engine compression caused by crankshaft rotation and pistons moving up and down inside the engine block. If the timing belt or timing chain fails it will cause the camshaft to become out of correlation with the crankshaft or allow the camshaft to stop rotating. Either of these conditions will cause the engine to lose compression and sometimes cause internal engine damage.
  • Fuel Delivery System - The fuel system includes: fuel pump, fuel injectors, pressure regulator, fuel filter and pressure lines. This system is used to supply fuel under pressure to the fuel injection system, the lack of fuel pressure or volume will cause the fuel delivery system to fail and the engine to stall or not start.
  • Ignition Spark Delivery System - The ignition system components include: spark plugs, spark plug wires, distributor (if applicable), crankshaft angle sensor, camshaft angle sensor, ignition coil, ignition module, knock sensor and PCM (powertrain control module). The engine relies on the ignition spark to be delivered to the combustion camber at the correct time. If the ignition spark stops or is delivered at the wrong time the engine will not run or run poorly.

Whenever your engine cranks but does not start, runs rough, staggers, sags or cuts off, follow this Troubleshooting Guide. Some of these steps require a code scanner. They are costly but AutoZone will loan you one for FREE.

Most vehicles operate by the same principle; basic troubleshooting procedures apply to most cars.

  • Step 1: Anytime you have a problem with electronically controlled components such as an engine, transmission, ABS brake, or SRS (supplemental restraint system, Air Bag) inspect all fuses using a test light and check the under hood power distribution center and under dash fuse panels. If all fuses test okay continue to the next step.
  • Step 2: To check for problems with electronically controlled components such as an engine, transmission, ABS brake, or SRS (supplemental restraint system, Air Bag) and the fuses test okay a trouble code scan is needed to identify any system trouble. Use a simple scanner tool to retrieve trouble codes and see if they relate to the specific problem, like a crank angle sensor failure code. If the trouble code present does not pertain to the immediate problem like an EVAP code ignore it until a later time, after the car is running.


The reason we repair non-related codes after the engine is running is because sometime false codes can be triggered by the engine not running. Once the engine is running again the code present might cycle and turn itself off. You might say "if the engine doesn't run shouldn't it have a trouble code?" Sometimes conditions occur that will not be detected by the computer, example: if the fuel pump fails the computer cannot detect the failure, so the engine doesn't start and the computer thinks everything is okay with no codes. If no trouble codes are present proceed to the next step.

Check for a crankshaft position sensor circuit being open, or the crankshaft position sensor is bad.

Try to spray starting fluid into the intake of the engine, and then if it starts for a few seconds, then it's a bad fuel delivery problem like a fuel pump or clogged fuel filter.

If the glow plugs aren't working then the Diesel won't fire up.

How old is the Diesel in the truck? Is it out of season?

Crankshaft Position (CP) Sensor OPERATION The CP sensor is mounted on the right front of some V8 engines, is a variable reluctance sensor triggered by a trigger pulse wheel (36 minus 1 tooth). Its purpose is to provide the PCM with an accurate ignition timing reference (when the piston reaches 10 degrees BTDC) and injector operation information (twice each crankshaft revolution). The crankshaft vibration damper is fitted with a 4 lobe pulse ring. As the crankshaft rotates, the pulse ring lobes interrupt the magnetic field at the tip of the CP sensor.
TESTING -crankshaft position sensor Using DVOM on the AC scale and set to monitor less than 5V, measure voltage between the sensor Cylinder Identification (CID) terminal and ground. The sensor is okay if the voltage reading varies more than 0.1V AC with the engine running at varying RPM.

its a bad valve, get your heads eplaced or rebuilt, if you dont the valve will drop into your cylinder and destroy the piston, i had the same problem and i didnt fix it and that truck no longer exists
