Thanks I will look into that. occasionally when I accelerate from a stop light I will hear a klang. Is this related?

I have the same problem with a 2.4L 3spd 1999 Caravan...I think they use the same engine and/or tranny. Please post what fixed your problem, if it's fixed. My P0743 code has been on for a year, and the van is now in the shop to try to fix it so it will pass emissions inspection.

I just repaired a P0743 code on by Neon. After fixing everything I could short of replacing the solenoid itself, I found that cleaning and resetting the two square connectors behind the gauge cluster in the dashboard solved the issue. Apparently, the connection that operates the speedometer also provides input to the ECM from the vehicle speed sensor, so if your speedometer runs intermittently, or doesn't work at all, cleaning and resetting the connectors might help. The top of the dashboard just pops off if you lift it gently, and the gauge cluster is held in place with 4 screws. Remove them, and make sure the connectors in the back have a good connection.

How do you clean and reset the two square connectors behind the gauge cluster? I know how to get the cluster off and unplug it...

The contacts are the size of a spade connector. I used an emery board or a piece of sandpaper folded. You may also need to shim the dashboard connectors closer to the gauge cluster by slipping some shim stock (or paper, cardboard, light gauge metal, etc.) under the mounting tabs. My guess is that as the dashboard heats up over the course of many hot summer days, the tabs weaken and lose their ability to hold the dashboard connectors securely in place, or perhaps the entire plastic dashboard warps slightly.

If the converter clutch does not lock at all it may be a problem with the ECM, or some problem with the emissions or sensors have the ECM "out of loop". (in which case the "Check Engine" appears) If the converter clutch is hanging engaged, killing the engine at stops, that is more likely a problem with a solenoid valve in the transaxle. You will need to consult a manual covering the transaxle for the location of the solenoid.

Probably not related to the converter clutch. If you hear the noise with the 1-2 shift, it may be a worn out rubber engine mount. Think it's time to inspect the underside of the car.

Go here - www.jeepforum.com/forum/f11/tech-faq-links-tsbs-89273/ - and find the AW-4 Service and Diagnostic Manual. Looks like you need to test some solenoids.
