SOURCE: Truck surges in gear idle. Check engine light

Check to see if there is any vacuum hoses off at the black intake tube, or at the vacuum tee on the left rear of the upper intake manifold. The vacuum
hose(s) on the tee were a common problem, and would come off, creating a lean condition and set the check engine light on.

SOURCE: truck has surging idle when cold scanner says bank

I found this on two 1999 F150 trucks with 5.4L. One was mine. There is a vacuum hose on the back passenger side of the engine that is about the size and length of your thumb. With age, this hose will collapse and then develop a vacuum leak. It can be pretty load if leaking.

SOURCE: Ford E-350 2001 V-10 gas.

Check your fuel vapor recovery system, your van has unusual set up, and the effect is RAW fuel gets purged, rather than vapor.
The dead giveaway test is does the issue happen on light acceleration? Does it stop if you let off the throttle? Can you accelerate harder and "get past" the issue?

S80 engine surge at idle

You could have a bad or contaminated Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor. You can get a used one online for less then 100. You can also purchase a can of MAF sensor cleaner at a local auto supplies store and clean it. It located right at the air filter housing.

Engine surges at rpm over 1500

Look for a vacuum leak (lines and intake), Is the engine light on, were any codes present? A faulty EGR or IAC could cause the problem too. Check the throttle cable for any restrictions.

The 1st thing to do here is test the engine control computer for fault codes, if none are present then do the following to clean the automatic idle speed control valve and the throttle valve, they get sludged up and this causes stalling and idle surge among other issues. So before you do any parts replacing do the cleaning, it costs about $5 and 30 minutes of your time. Here is the procedure. My experience? 35 years as a dealer factory trained technican.

Buy a can of throttle valve cleaner (it is made by CRC) from the local auto parts store, spray it into the air intake through the throttle body of the engine until you have used about half the can, you will need to hold the idle up while you do this, it will try to stall, after this shut the engine down and disconnect the Negative (-) battery cable for 5 minutes. The intake is now clean, if you continue to have the idle speed control problems you may need to seek the help of a professional.
