Question about 1990 Lexus LS 400

1990 LS 400 Brakes

My brakes have failed. I replaced the master cylinder and all brake lines. I am now being told that I need to replace the ABS, the "brains" to the braking system. Where can I find the part? and how much is it? and is this in fact the problem. The brake pedal goes all the way to the floor and I have little braking ability.

Thanks for any help you may provide

Yes the brake system has been bleed on several occassion

  • eellbb Jan 11, 2009

Lexus says the ABS has failed but they say the cost to replace the part is $2200. Are used parts available.

Lexus has told meI the ABS needs replacement. I have sense learned that each wheel has an ABS and the cost of each is about $200. I am going to find out if you have to replace all four or whether each are independent of each other and you can possibly replace the particular wheel that is bad.

If anyone knows about the ABS let me know

    Thanks

You need to go to a Auto part store to purchase this part, if you don't that tpye of money to pay for it, maybe you can check a junk yard. I am not sure how mach it cost, but if buy new it will cost alot, part & repair. It's best to buy it, and have someone you know that can do the job for you, because the shop will charge all for the labor, and that is like $55.00 per-hour. I hope I have help you. Be smart in what you do, and who you see for this job OK.

How to bleed abs brakes when air is in master cylinder

Abs brakes have to be bled in the order the manual states, you will need a power bleeder then follow instructions in the manual. it is the abs cylinder that is hard to get the air out of, imposable if the instructions are not followed .

Rebuilt brake master cylinder brake go to floor

there is still air in the system. To bleed the brakes bleed out the m/cyl first by loosing off the lines at the cylinder v/ This primes the master cylinder first. Then starting at the longest line first bleed out the air finishing at the shortest line

Does the 1990 Lexus LS400 master cylinder come with traction control?

traction control is a separate system. If traction control or ABS is a problem they are taken out of the loop and the normal brakes still work. The master is for the brake system/ The ABS module and valve body and wheel sensors are your traction/antiskip system.

Spongy brakes

Does sound like you need a new master cylinder. On a 2000 you wont need to back bleed. You will just need to follow the instruction and bleed the master and all four points. you will probably need to bleed the ABS block and proportioning valve but only if they have bleeders on them.

Just replaced master cylinder on 1990 aerostar and bled the brakes, still the pedal goes to floor and i have no brakes

Did you bench bleed the master cyl. before installing it? then when you installed the new master, did you bleed all 4 points? If yes, then check all for points for leaking caliper/s and leaking wheel cylinder/s. If the van has ABS, check the valve body for a bleeder screw and see if air bleeds out of it. If you've checked everything twice and did everything right then your new master cyl. may be defective.

Is a computer needed to bleed brake system?

bleed the brakes the easy way is to have two peoples one to pump the brake pedal and the other one is to open the bleeder use the driver side front wheel it close to the master cylinder and you could get a brake bleeder and do it by yourself.

I have a 1990 Lexus LS 400 and the brakes have failed. I replaced the master cylinder, the brake lines and now being told the ABS "brains" of the braking system needs replacement. Has anyone had this...

If the pedal is spongy you may still have air in the lines. If there are no brakes at all you may need to adjust the push rod for the master cyl. If the ABS has a fault it will set a code and the rest of the brake sys. will work normally
