SOURCE: lower intake manifold gasket leaking 02 Olds Silhouette

This is basicly a very time consuming job rather than a physically hard one to complete. In order to replace the gasket you must remove the intake plenum, throttle body, and misc. vacuum hoses. The wiring harness connections must also be disconnected. Finally the intake manifold is exposed. The bolts holding the manifold to the block are removed exposing the leaking gasket. After removing the push rods and placing them in the correct order to be replaced the gasket and sealants can be removed. Finally replace everything in reverse order. Be sure to consult a GM manual for correct bolt torch specs. The correct specs for the manifold bolts usually come with the gasket. Make sure to change your oil a few times after this job in case any coolant entered the block. Also, change the thermostat and the oil seal on the distributor half shaft cap while you have everything off. Good Luck

If there are not any obvious leaks in the cooling system, this problem is more than likely caused by a bad lower intake manifold gasket. The 3.1, 3.4, and 3.8 liter engines are quite famous for this problem.

Oil in anti-freeze

That is not a good sign. These are a few ways this can happen. Bad head gasket, bad intake manifold gasket, cracked or warped head, or a cracked engine block. If the intake manifold gasket hasn't been replaced yet, have it checked for leaks. The 3100 and 3400 V6 engines are prone for intake gasket failure.

Position The Intake Manifold Gasket On The Engine.Dowels May Be Provided To Hold The Gasket In Place During Manifold Installation.. The Use Of Silicone Sealer Is Required. Especially Where The Front And The Rear Seals Meet The Side Gaskets On V-type Engines. Installing An Intake Manifold On V-type Engines Can Be Difficult. Start All The Fasteners By Hand Before Tightening. This Will Aid In Bolt Hold Alignment. Then Torque The Intake Manifold Fasteners To Specifications. Use The Specific Torque Pattern Given In The Service Manual.. Basically The Pattern Will Be A Crisscross Pattern

99 Gran Am 3.4 litre engine, lower manifold leak.

Yes it is common, generally the best thing you can do is buy the most expensive gaskets you can find, use "right stuff" rtv gasket material wherever you can (do not use on seals that come into contact with fuel, and as with all rtvs apply a thin bead and do not spread or smooth with your finger or anything else, just apply and press the part on, if it smears when re-installing remove it, clean it thoroughly and start over). Also be sure to check the manifold for warping or cracking, and have a machine shop resurface all areas that are sealed with a gasket.

completely agree with emissionwiz. intake manifold gasket needs replaced. it took me 12 hours to do mine 2 months ago (a known pontiac defect). buy the top of the line replacement metal gasket. pontiac used a plastic gasket when they produced this engine, 3.1, 3.6 and 3.8 engines all have the same problem. i took my time and also replaced the hoses, thermostat, etc. and lastly....after you finish adding coolant dont forget to bleed air out of the the system. the screw should be painted blue....nice weekend job...take your time.

1999 Pontiac Grand Am with "lower intake leak"...What does this mean specifically? Would this mean the intake for the radiator, gasket, or valve?

Usually intake has to do with the induction system, as in intake manifold , The intake manifold can have several types of leaks, the intake can have a vacuum leak, oil leak, coolant leak or a combination of any of the before mentioned....hope this helps,

Takes a few turn overs to start

Upper Intake Manifold Gasket,
Lower Intake Manifold Gasket.

If it was that, it isn't because of gas, its because of that damn Dex-Cool Antifreeze.

Manifold gaskets

If you are talking about 3.4L engine there are only two manifold gaskets. But there are Four Intake gaskets two for the upper intake and two for the lower intake.
