Question about 2000 Ford Expedition

My 2000 Ford Expedition 5.4L V8 4x4 idles really bad when stopped at a red light. Sometimes it will just stall. It always starts back up. It goes just fine when I hit the gas, real smooth and powerful. It just when Im about to stop it starts to get rough and when stopped it is shaking and sounds like it is choking, the lights flicker and once and a while it will stall. The check engine light is on reading codes: PO171 (system adaptive fuel too lean bank 1) and PO174 (system adaptive fuel too lean bank 2). had the codes read at autozone and the guy said it could be the Mass Air Flow sensor. He said to remove it and then to start the truck and if the problem went away I needed a new one. So I did that, and when i started it the idling was worse and it stalled really fast and was in park. It never stalled in park before. It always only stalls in drive while stopped. I sometimes put it in park while at a light to keep it from dying. So I put the Mass air flow sensor back on. I recently replaced the PCV valve and the hose for it. I recently changed the spark plugs and coil packs. I also just changed the fuel filter. Any Help?

Check the idle fuel pressure. Load the electrical with headlights and heater defrost etc and see if problem gets worse. Attempt again with all accessories off. Could be fuel pump is getting low voltage at idle or fuel pump is failing. Bad fuel pump would definitely be a problem high fuel demand. Check vacuum line between pressure regulator to intake manifold.

Check for a air leak in the intake manifold. Gasket/hose etc. The P0171/P0174 is an indication that not enough fuel or tow much air. You can sometimes hear the air leak during idle.


Best solution is to use a graphic capable scan tool and watch the fueling trim/idle.

yes very very common code for these motors i get them all the time. now the first thing i do is listen to the pcv valve for noise if it is rattling this is the problem and is the most common of all. another thing is the intakes leak from cracks in them but the only way to find it is with a smoke machine. now the one other thing i have seen before is debre like a leaf in the mass air flow sensor but you have replaced it so most likely no that.

do your self a favor and change the pcv valve it only cost under 5 dollars. if this is not it you will need to find the leak in and around the intake or a vacuum hose.

because you have two lean banks this mean if it is a leak then it has to be in common with both banks and that is the vacuum line system intake etc...

sounds like EGR valve and sensor this controls idle speed when at a stop. the po171 is a burn lean or rich code need to know what bank 1 or 2. also check for a vacuum leak from one of the hoses.

simple test to do
apply the hand brake
start the engine --if it idles ok --no engine problem
apply the foot brake --if it stalls ---replace the brake booster
if it runs ok --run the fault codes

Car engine idles really high then really low, why?


It can be issue with IAC( idle air control valve) causing the problem.


There are many other possibilities causing these idle issues. Engine idles rough.

Likly vacume leak. does it have the 4 litre straight 6? if so spray aero start at nr 1 & 2 intake to head & see if rpm changes.

Vehicle shuts off sometimes when stopping


Set your idle speed to mfg recomindation if that doesnt help check the dash pot that is what keeps the engine from stalling at sudden speed reduction

You need to change the thermostat, it must be stuck open and the computer thinks the engine is always cold, hence the fast idle and smoke.
