Question about GMC Savanna

Open Question

2002 GMC savanna van, was told the pitman arm, the idler arm, and center link need to be replaced. Then it would need an alignment? Does this sound normal?

The idler isn't bad, Remove cotter pin going through the nut, take off nut, you need a seperator tool to pull apart the arm from the center link, once that is done, remove the two bolts holding it to the frame, remove arm, installation is just reverse.
The pitman arm is a little more to it. Do the same, remove cotter pin, take off nut, and seperate it from the rod, now there is big nut holding it on to the bottom of the steering box, take that nut off (some are a real pain), you will need a pitman arm puller to get it off. Note the position of the arm, need to put new one in same place, pull it off slow, sometimes seals will come with it, put seals back in same way, if they come out. Put some grease on splined shaft, tap new arm on until you can get nut on, tighten up with nut. Hopefully you have any problems. Good luck.

Don't worry it is not too hard if you keep at. One "special tool" that you will need is a ball joint separator to separate the ball joint on the idler arm from the steering. When changing make sure to compare your replacement parts with the original and if necessary make a diagram of how things go together. On the bottom, there is a castle nut and a cotter pin. Remove the pin and loosen the nut then use the ball joint separator to remove the idler arm. (This is the hardest part of the job.) Then remove the remaining bolts and take the part off. Before putting the new idler arm make sure that you put the new grease fitting on it (and go ahead and squirt a little grease in it even though it already has some) and in between the new ball joint and the steering there should be a plastic bearing that slips into place. It's a pretty straight forward job and once you take a good look at it you will see what all needs to be done. Hope this helps, let me know how it goes. Goodluck!

Alignment has alot to do with the tires not shimmying.. Like zero toe setting. Loose componants like tie rod ends and the idler ar worn. You can ck for excess front end play by holding the front and back of the wheel and pushing and pulling on it, like rocking it. OR have someone rock the steering while you watch where the play is from underneath. By rocking I mean turn the steering wheel back and forth. Look at all th joints and pivot points for excess play, which is, movement not immediate to the rest of the steering system. Tire balance is very important. Wheel hop is a sign of a bad tire and it overtaxes the shock absorber. Shocks don't cause shimmy because they are a vertical movement controlA shimmy is lateral or side to side.Wheel balance weights must be spit. If a 2 oz. weight is needed to balance the tire, Oe once should be on the inside of the wheel and one ounce on the outside directly across from each outher.. Loose wheel brgs will cause shimmy, but they would not last long. Caster setting on the wheel alignment will also cause shimmy. Like on a shopping car. too much caster causes the wheel to start fluttering and is very hard on other componants. This may be why you have worn tie rod ends and a bad pitman arm. Worn control arm bushings and ball joints directly affect titre wear and can only be feltwhen the front end hits a dip and detected by side wear on the tire edges. Summary: replace the tie rod end and have the car aligned. Good Luck, -Ned_ sorry about the book

Provided as to wether or not your model has a steering damper (if smo, may likely need replacing) and the ball joints check good, it may be likely that you have a worn steering gear. Many types are adjustable or rebuildable.

SOURCE: Had the Pitman arm and idler Arm replaced

I have had both the Pitman and Idler Arms,seize almost the same day, on a veh still under warrantee.
I have also replaced many over 45 years,just as general maintenance,before they caused,tire wear or worse. So no big deal!

The other issues will be solved,most likely, by removing the steering wheel and replacing the Clock Spring. Then the air bag will be happy and your wheel buttons,computer and radio, can once again,communicate and work properly.

Follow the proper proceedure in disarming the air bag,so you don't get hurt!!

I have a 1994 gmc sonoma with 150,000 miles that follows the contour of the road to much or wonders what can cause this,when I get an alignment they tell me everything is fine.


Your vehicle has the "old-style" front steering...inner & outer tie rods, center link, pitman and idler arms. Wandering is often caused by a worn idler arm. At 150000 miles it is not unusual for them to wear out. A GOOD mechanic will catch a worn idler during inspection when aligning the vehicle. Many techs are too lazy and don't bother.

I'm guesing you have had your tires balanced and wheels aligned. If this does not help, then you have a broken belt in one of your front tires.

How do I check the idler arm and pitman arm for good or bad before changing them?


It can be difficult to make the determination without someone helping you. The pitman arm comes off the steering box output shaft and is the first motion that is evident from steering input. To check play here, let vehicle remain on the ground to where the front tires touch and restrain any movement. Have assistant turn steering wheel back and forth while you note any movement between shaft and drag/center link connection. At the sane time slide over to passenger's side of drag/center link and note any movement between the fixed idler arm and its connection to the drag/center link. Some slight movement is allowable, but substantial movement requires replacement. Once safely on jack stands, have your assistant grasp the driver's side tire at 9 and 3 o'clock and make short quick movements in and out. Observe any movement. Replace any item that is excessively worn. Use a pickle fork or ball joint separator tool to dismantle and take measurements of length of worn out items in order to approximate re-installation of new part.

Steering wheel has to much play


Idler arm and or pitman arm most common.could also be excessive play in steering gear box.Tie rods/center link but usually its my first 2 choices go bad bothe of them idler and pitman common wear parts.

Need the torque specs for the nuts on the pitman arm stud and the idler arm stud (nuts that hold the linkage on the studs) for a 2003 sierra 1500HD, 4wd, 6.0L, crew cab


pit man arm to steering gear nut 186 ft lbs.

pit man arm to relay rod nut 46 ft lbs.

idler arm to frame nut 73 ft lbs.

How to replace a idler arm and pitman arm need to replace it on my 98 gmc suburban 4x4


You will need the proper tools to remove them which can be rented at auto parts stores. The pitman arm has to pulled off with an pitman arm puller also have to drop steering box I believe to change it. I know we did on my 1996 Tahoe the idler arm can be seperated with a front end fork also available at parts store. You just drive it between the idler arm and tie rod after removing castle nut and cotter pen.

How to change the pittman arm and idler arm on a 1999 S10 Chevy Blazer 4x4?


Pitman arm requires a pitman arm puller, and a tie rod seperator or "pickle fork". Remove the cotter pin on from the joint on the pitman arm and center link, then remove the nuts from both ends of pitman arm. Use the pitman arm puller to remove the pitman arm from the steering gear, then use the tie rod seperator to remove the end from the center link. Reinstall and retighten nuts, do not leave out the cotter pin.
Idler arm will require tie rod seperator. Remove the cotter pin from the end at the center link, use the tie rod seperator to seperate the joint there. Unbolt the idler arm from the frame, and remove. On reinstalling remember to install a new cotter pin. It would be best to have the front end alignment checked after replacing these parts.

Install pitman arm


remove the large nut where it attaches to the steering box, the small nut where it attaches to the center link. you will need a pitman arm puller to get it off the steering box. before you pull it off, take note of the positioning of the arm, there are 4 possible ways to put it on and you HAVE to put it back on the same way. dont forget to get an alignment after.

jack up and support van passenger side first with wheels straight remove wheel unbolt idler arm from center link and using a fork designed for removing front end parts some auto stores let u borrow / loan u fork remove idler arm unbolt (2) from frame replace and bolt in new one replace wheel other side wheels straight jack and remove wheel mark pitman at steer box so u can transfer mark to new pitman unbolt and us fork to remove pitman from center link us pulley to remove pitman transfer marks to new arm align up replace bolt up replace wheel done
