Engine quits while cruising ( but idles fine & revs up ok while stopped)

2005 Ford Freestar SE "AdvanceTrac" 102,000 miles VIN 2FMDA 5166 5BA 35 190 (assembled in Canada) 3.9L V6 SPI --- I am original owner. For past 6 months it has been in the Washington DC area. I have no memory of whether it's ever had a "tune-up" at the dealer. - but it has had all regular maint performed by same dealer (Sheehy Ford, Gaithersbug, MD). Problem started a few days ago. Engine stops - but all electrical continues to work (lights radio, wipers, heat). Continuously fails almost every 5 minutes - usually up hill - usually between 25 MPH & 45 MPH. Easily restarted while car is in motion ( shift to Neutral, turn off ignition, turn on ignition, start, Shift to Drive). First, I hear engine "pinging" along with coughing (backfiring ?) and jerking (hesitating ?) then engine quits. Usually I can postpone it by removing foot from accel pedal -or- shifting to Neutral then back to Drive. I have disconnected the cable to the PCM ( I'm pretty sure that I saw a tiny bit of water inside) did -not- try to dry it. Next, using CRC Industries "QD Electronic Cleaner" (contains Hexane Isomers, Ethanol, and Difluoroethane) I heavily sprayed each of the 2 or 3 dozen tiny holes in the cable end and sprayed inside the PCM itself where the cable connects. I reconnected within 3 (three) minutes of spraying this quick dry product that's supposed to "displace water". Absolutely no change - no improvement - even after several hours, and after 35 minutes of driving.

Have you ever replaced the fuel filter or fuel pump? Have the fuel pressure and regulator checked. A weak pump will certainly cause engine stalls. A clogged or partially clogged fuel filter will cause this as well. If your pump is the problem, spend the money for a OEM type replacement pump. The cheapo's are foriegn made and you'll be buying another pump in a week.

No Codes?

Quites only when hot & driven 20 miles?

Your the original owner-- but do not know what
has been worked on in 6 years. You & I would have
real serious issues face to face

I hope you know that for the last 25 years a tune-up
is only spark plugs. No tune-ups-- just shops living in the
past with the nonsense of advertising to get you in there

I assume since your in love with dealers & I hate them- that
you have had nothing tested or gone for a ride with a scan tool
to check data. You need to be part of the process or your
going to get hosed at these places

Worst part is they don't fix anything

Could be the egr valve or system item
Could be coils breaking done as well as egr
Could be fuel issues

But shutting off,not the usually senerio

SOURCE: 2005 Ford Freestar. Started car,

These are common for stripping the splines in the torque converter for the pump shaft. If it did this when you check the fluid with the engine running it will read overfull. To fix it you would have to remove the transmission and replace the torque converter.

2005 Ford Freestar, altenator went out, During the process the Brake/ABS dash lights came on, when the battery got low, The transmission shifts fine, working normal.

ok you changed the altenator did you do this yourself ? now take off the battery cables and reconnect them to clear the trouble codes and use your key fob when the alarm sounds to stop it from going into theft mode put the key in the ignition and turn it to the run position do not try to start it yet wait about 3 minutes for the system to get all the voltage parameters back then turn the key off then start the car it may idle rough at first do not apply any gas peddle just let it run after the idle stabilizes drive the vehicle so it can continue to relearn the operating system parameters if the lights come on again take it to auto zone or advance ETC. to get it scanned but I think you should be ok the system works by voltage and being the altenator went bad the systems voltage was way down causing the codes good luck Stephen

2005 Ford Explorer TPS and Adavance Trac lights are on.

Yes, using a tire of a different size will likely set the lights. Not sure what your local emissions test requires, but I would not put a bunch of miles on the car with the spare.

Need to replace spark plugs on a 2005 Ford Freestar mini van, not sure how to get to back spark plugs #1, 2, &6 how do I get to them.

You have a coil on plug or COP. to get to it you'll need a 1/4 drive extension.with a swivel socket and a 7mm socket youll just have manuver your way in , now if anything is in the way and your confident of removing what is the way you will suceed in removing the COP which allows you to remove the sparkplugs.
