I beleive your firing order is 1 3 4 2. 1 and 4 are companion cylinders-meaning the piston is up or down at the same time i.e. compression and exhaust stroke both pistons are up and even on the exhaust stroke the ignition fires in order to burn unburnt fuel/ h ve you checked your trigger. There is a good coil testing tool that is placed over the coil and has a magnetic pickup that allows you to see if the coil is being triggered-just because you have power doesn't mean that you will have spark. I would replace your ignition wires and look at your wiring harness very carefully- if it is very brittle and you see bare wires exposed that is your most likley problem because the trigger is working for 1 and 3 and has the crank senser input for all for spark plugs and the cam senser is used for ignition advance and your fuel injection system. try wiggling your harness and see if your coils start to work. wireharnesses are a major problem on mercedes benz vehicles of that era. I have seen coil packs go bad on several Hyundai Accents, the coils will do exactly what they are supposed to (hence your check with an ohm meter), however, the coils short through the outer casing. Try running the car when it is dark out and spraying the coil packs with water. Listen for clicking and watch for arching from the coils to any metal around them. Look for abnormal detonation marks in the outer casing. My guess is you just need a set of new coils. If the Problem is worse in the rain then you have found your problem. Remember, If your car has been misfiring (as noted by the engine codes you listed), the EGR valve can become clogged and damage can be done to your catalytic converter as unburned fuel detonates inside it (keep an eye out for O2 codes in the future). Also, your new plugs can become fouled, be sure they are clean once you fix the problem. Checking your plugs can also be a useful indication of which cylinder is misbehaving.

I have changed a few cylinder heads under warranty for this type of problem. The exhaust valve guides wear, this causes the exhaust valve to seat badly, giving low compression. if one cylinder compresion reading is more than about 50 psi below the others, then this warrants head removal. It is quite a job, due to the fact that the camshft id chain driven. If you are up for it then once the head is removed, poor liquid into the exhaust ports and see if it leaks out through any of the exhaust valves.

it is always a good idea to stay with o.e.m parts and yes there is updated parts in the newer coils. and yes the M.A.F will also cause misfire faults but will not make check engine light flash or make car shake and shudder. also check you wire harness going to your coils make sure your ground wires are not cracked. That could be the main culprate. good luck hope this helps

Replaced coil pacxk but number 4 cylinder still doesnt fire


This could be down to the high tension lead being faulty between the coil pack and spark plug. Other causes could be spark plug itself, or low compression, fuel injector.

What causes misfires?


If the misfire is on one a particular cylinder or perhaps 2, these issues need to be addressed and checked...
1. Power to the spark plug.
2. Coils and spark plug condition.
3. Fuel supply to the cylinder
4. Air supply to the cylinder
5. Correct fuel/ air mixture to the cylinder
6. Cylinder compression. Low compression or a cylinder compression level below spec will result in a misfire. If the compression tester shows low compression in a cylinder the causes of the poor compression reading then need to be addressed.

The fault codes generated by the computer and read by an appropriate scanner will tell you which cylinder or cylinders are misfiring.

No, a plugged converter would cause the engine not to breathe properly. Too much back pressure would stall the engine or make it run very poorly. It would not be local to any one cylinder-all of them would be affected.

To diagnose a misfire in one cylinder, well, you start at that cylinder. It could be ignition related- the spark plug and spark plug wire for #6, possibly the ignition coil for #6 in the coil pack for the engine. (A v-6 would have 3 coils in the coil pack, one coil for 2 cylinders.) It could also be fuel related, so the fuel injector for cylinder 6 should be considered. And the last reason for a misfire is usually the most expensive repair: low compression in #6. This may be a head gasket problem, or a piston ring problem, or one of the valves for #6 may not be sealing well, causing low compression and the resultant misfire. The engine computer codes a misfire when it senses low power output from that particular cylinder. The misfire causes a lag in crankshaft rotation, and the crankshaft position sensor senses it.

One possibility for a misfire, when you have spark on a cylinder, is that the cylinder may have low compression and thus very poor power. This will cause a slight stumble in the engine which is picked up by the crank sensor as a misfire. Check the compression on the number four cylinder and compare it to the others. All cylinders should have approximately the same compression You could have a burnt valve or worn valve seat.

What is causing this? my 2001 alero has misfire on cylinder 1, i have changed plugs, switched coil packs, it doesnt seem to get up to speed. what is the problem??


The compression could be too low to create the bang it needs, I have seen it a lot, try the connecting wiring harness first it might just have a bad connection, but it does sound like low compression

I check sparkflug while engine in idle, I try to take out sparkflug 01 and the idle sounds better also no. 04 but the sparkflug 02 , 03 the idle is more high to low


That sounds like your coil pack. The coil to number 1 & 4 may be bad. The other coil, to number 2 & 3 cylinder is good and working.
If it's not the coil, you may have to check the wiring to the coil pack-something is amiss. You could swap the coils around and see if the misfire follows your switch to 2 and 3...
If the above don't get no good results, it's not an ignition problem, then you will need to check compression on number one cylinder. Look for any mechanical problem from low compression. 3 major causes of misfires: gas, spark, or compression.

Cylinder misfire


If you already replaced all those thing there is only 2 things left that could be causing this problem one(you don't what it to be this one) low compression on cylinder 3 or the cheap fix, the coil pack, I would check the coil pack before checking compression.

I have a ford explorer 99 but it's giving a error code PO306 what do u think it is


It sounds like a misfire. Check spark plugs 5 and 6. It could be bad fuel, bad plug wire, or weak coil. Check the fuel injectors as well. Other possible causes could be an egr valve stuck open, vacuum leaks, low fuel pressure.

Code p306 misfire on injector 6


Random misfires are usually caused by a leaking vaccum pipe, and will only be apparent at idle and sometimes at low engine speeds under part throttle.
Isolated misfires are usually caused by a faulty injector, coil pack, ignition lead, or low compression.

Well, you're going to have to check the spark plug,  spark plug wire, the coil pack, low compression, and the ignition lead, which only really leaves the injector, or even an intake leak at the offending cylinder. 

Start the engine and then spray intake spray or the like around the intake at the offending cylinder and see if the engine note changes. If it does, then you have an intake leak, otherwise, they need to check the injector in the offending cylinder. 

Good luck and hope this helps. It might just be time for a tune up: new spark plugs and wire or some fuel injector cleaner every fill up for now.
