3.8 engine. can it be the solenoid?

Locked Up how? Could be a torque converter solenoid
on some transmissions

Only had that happen once to me on a road test with
a customers car, not on a caravan & they were 50%
of our business

    even in neutral it wont roll. when I put it in gear (any gear) and press the accelarator it just puts the engine under load and doesnt move the van.

    if the torque convertor solenoid is not working the convertor will get over heat but the car will move.

    ok there are 2 this that can cause that kind of problem. park brake seazed up. 2 is there is a park lock in side the transmission that lockes the front wheels when you put the car in park. now the question is are the front wheels locked or the rear?

    its the front wheels that are locked. if you put it in revers and floor it, it will go backwards some but it acts like its in drive and reverse at the same time and they are fighting each other. so you don't think its the solenoid unit on the front of the transmission?

    if it was a salenoid it will give a code. check the codes i naver expriences this kind of problem yet but my exprience tells me is not a hydrolic issue its mechanical. there must be a component broken in side which is locking the transmission if the car dont go forward or back its a broken oil pump in the trans but in your case its going in the gear nut something is locking it.

The de-energized solenoid releases the mechanical lock allowing the driver to move the shift lever out of the PARK position. When the transmission is out of the PARK position, the shift lock control solenoid remains de-energized.
During remote start operation, the BCM will energize the shift lock control circuit, locking the shift lever in the PARK position.

The BCM supplies and monitors a reference voltage to the door lock switch through the door lock switch lock/unlock signal circuit. The door lock switch also receives a constant ground source. If a door lock switch is placed in the lock position, the reference voltage is taken directly to ground and the BCM senses 0.0 volts on the signal circuit. If a door lock switch is placed in the unlock position, the reference voltage is taken to ground through a 15k ohm resister that is internal to the door lock switches and senses approximately 2.9 volts on the signal circuit. This is how the BCM determines what portion of the door lock switch was activated.

Define won't crank ? I'am assuming the key will turn to the start position ! When doing so does the starter spin the engine or not ? Trying to define your problem of won't crank . If when you turn the key to start position an the starter spins the engine over but doesn't start an run , this is a cranks no start condition . If nothing happens when you turn the key to start , this is a no crank no start condition . Your vehicle has a safety system , shift interlock , won't let it shift out of park if the brake pedal isn't pressed . Won't let the key turn off either . Electronics involved , locking solenoid's etc.... Floor or column shift ?

The reverse lockout system is a safety feature which prevents an inadvertent shift into reverse at speeds above 5 km/h (3 mph). The system consists of the following components:
• The engine control module (ECM)/powertrain control module (PCM)
• The reverse lockout solenoid
With the ignition ON, battery voltage is supplied directly to reverse lockout solenoid. At forward speeds above 5 km/h (3 mph), the ECM/PCM commands the reverse lockout solenoid ON by grounding the control circuit of the solenoid. This energizes the solenoid and mechanically prevents the shift lever from being moved into the REVERSE position. At forward speeds below 5 km/h (3 mph), the ECM/PCM commands the reverse lockout solenoid OFF, de-energizing the solenoid, which allows the shift lever to move into the REVERSE position.

Power Mode Master
This vehicles BCM functions as the power mode master (PMM). The ignition switch is a low current switch with multiple discrete ignition switch signals to the PMM for determination the power mode that will be sent over the serial data circuits to the other modules that need this information, and so the PMM will activate relays and other direct outputs of the PMM as needed. Refer to Power Mode Description and Operation for a complete description of power mode functions.
You have no clue of the electronics in your vehicle , your best bet have it towed to the Buick dealer .

Automatic Transmission Shift Lock Control System
The automatic transmission shift lock control system is a safety device that prevents an inadvertent shift out of PARK when the engine is running. The driver must press the brake pedal before moving the shift lever out of the PARK position. The system consists of the following components.
• The automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid
• The brake switch
• The rear integration module (RIM)
• The transmission control module (TCM) or powertrain control module (PCM)
With the ignition ON, battery positive voltage is supplied to the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid from the ignition 3 relay. The automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid is controlled by the rear integration module. When the rear integration module (RIM) receives a class 2 serial data message from the transmission control module (TCM) or powertrain control module (PCM) indicating that the shift lever is in the PARK position the rear integration module (RIM) grounds the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid control circuit. This causes the solenoid to energize mechanically locking the shift lever in the PARK position. When the driver presses the brake pedal the rear integration module receives the brake applied signal and turns off the ground to the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid control circuit. This allows the shift lever to be moved out of the PARK position.

There is no module on the brake pedal . There is a brake switch , do the brake lights work ? If the brake lights work switch is ok .

This energizes the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid causing the transmission shift lever to be physically locked in the PARK position. When the brake pedal is pressed the contacts in the automatic transmission shift lock control switch open, de-energizing the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid. Important: Depress the button on the side of the shift lock actuator. With the button is depressed, cycle the plastic straw within the shift lever 3 to 5 times. The straw should move smoothly and freely except near the top of the travel where additional force will be required to mechanically actuate the park lock mechanism inside of the shift lock actuator. If there is stick/slip or abnormal friction while cycling the plastic straw or if the straw is altogether stuck in the lever, the entire control assembly (shifter and shift lock actuator) needs to be replaced. Refer to Transmission Control Replacement . If there is no abnormal friction, replace the shift lock actuator. Refer to Automatic Transmission Shift Lock Control Actuator Replacement .

The powertrain control module (PCM)

The BCM controls the voltage to the shift lock control solenoid through the shift lock control solenoid controlled voltage circuit. The following conditions must be met before the BCM will supply voltage to the shift lock control solenoid:

The ignition is in the ON position.


?€¢
The PCM sends a class 2 message to the BCM indicating the transmission is in the PARK position.


?€¢
The BCM determines the brake pedal is not applied according to the stop lamp switch.

When the ignition is in the ON position, the ignition 1 fuse supplies voltage to the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid as the BCM supplies a ground to the control circuit, mechanically locking the shift lever in the PARK position as the solenoid energizes. When the brake pedal is applied, the BCM turns the ground of the control circuit OFF, de-energizing the shift lock control solenoid. The de-energized solenoid releases the mechanical lock allowing the driver to move the shift lever out of the PARK position. When the transmission is out of the PARK position, the shift lock control solenoid remains de-energized.

DTC B2707 Gearshift Unlock Circuit Low
The body control module (BCM) controls the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid by providing a controlled ground to the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid. The BCM utilizes a smart driver to monitor the voltage and current flow of the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid control circuit. DTC B2707 will set when the BCM detects a short to ground when the solenoid is in the OFF state.

  1. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  2. Press and hold the brake pedal.
  3. Attempt to move the shift lever out of the PARK position.
Does the shift lever move out of the PARK position?
Go to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections in Wiring Systems
Go to Step 3

  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Install a scan tool.
  3. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  4. Press and hold the brake pedal.
  5. With a scan tool, command the Brake to Shift Relay output control parameter On.
  6. Attempt to move the shift lever out of the PARK position.
Does the shift lever move out of the PARK position?
Go to Step 4

  1. With the scan tool, observe the Brake Switch parameter in the powertrain control module (PCM) data display list.
  2. Press and release the brake pedal several times while observing the scan tool.
Does the brake input display Applied and Released with the brake pedal operation?

With the scan tool observe the TR Sw. parameter in the body control module (BCM) data list.
Does the scan tool indicate PARK position?
Go to Step 9

  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Disconnect the harness connector of the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid.
  3. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  4. Press and hold the brake pedal.
  5. Attempt to move the shift lever out of the PARK position.
Does the shift lever move out of the PARK position?
Go to Step 7

Test the controlled ground circuit of the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid for a short to ground. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Inspect for poor connections as the harness connector of the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid. Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections and Connector Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Inspect for poor connections at the harness connector of the BCM. Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections and Connector Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Stuck in park will not shift


Automatic Transmission Shift Lock Control System
The automatic transmission shift lock control is a safety device that prevents an inadvertent shift out of PARK when the ignition is ON. The driver must press the brake pedal before moving the shift lever out of the PARK position. The system consists of the following components:

The automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid.


?€¢
The automatic transmission shift lock control switch.


?€¢
The park/neutral position switch.

With the ignition in the ON position, battery positive voltage is supplied to the park/neutral position switch. When the transmission is in the PARK position the contacts in the park/neutral position switch are closed. This allows current to flow through the switch to the automatic transmission shift lock control switch. The circuit continues through the normally-closed switch to the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid. The automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid is permanently grounded. This energizes the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid, locking the shift linkage in the PARK position. When the driver presses the brake pedal the contacts in the automatic transmission shift lock control switch open, causing the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid to release. This allows the shift lever to move from the PARK position.
Park Lock Solenoid
The park lock solenoid is a safety device that prevents an inadvertent shift out of PARK when the key is in the OFF position. The key must be in the RUN position to release the park lock solenoid. The system consists of the park lock solenoid. With the ignition in the ON position, voltage is supplied to the park lock solenoid. The park lock solenoid energizes through a permanent ground unlocking the shift lever. With the ignition in the OFF or ACCY position the park lock solenoid de-energizes and locks the shift lever in the park position.
Shift Lever Does Not Move with Brake Pedal Depressed
DEFINITION: Transmission shift lever will not move out of the PARK position with the ignition ON and the brake pedal pressed.
