SOURCE: one headlight dimmer than the other

you've got a grounding wire issue on the right side headlight.
trace the wire that goes to ground and make sure the connection is clean and tight... check for corrosion around the wire terminals and in the connector...

I went into town, turned off truck, headlights were working. Came out of store and no headlights. All the other lights, running lights, brake lights, signal lights work, but not headlights.

I guess you are saying that after you turned the ignition off, the headlights and all lights went off, but when you returned and turned ignition on all lights but the headlights came on. "a gremlin" stole my light switch? Possible, but most likely your headlight switch is bad, or the headlight relay, or if the dimmer switch makes no difference, It could be power supply or connection to the headlight dimmer relay is bad. Corrosion causes funny behavior. Clean bright metal connections make a world of difference. Follow headlight wiring back to a small box usually on the inside fender of the Engine bay. Check all connections including the ground to the frame (body metal).

R/H headlight went out and replaced it. It went out again. An hour later it was on and the left headlight was out. What can cause this?

corroded or loose wires can cause this. Unplug the light and clean the connections with contact cleaner (Radio Shack) and/or scrape the connectors with a small knife. If this doesn't solve the problem you will have to trace back to where the headlight power comes from and clean all those connections as well. It could also be a problem with the relays that power the lights.

Head lights burn out and fuse has been replaced and instantly goes out again

It is a short in the headlight circuit somewhere after the fuse. I would check first the headlight dimmer switch. They used to be on the floor. I think your model is equipped with a combination multi-function switch on the steering column that controls a relay. I would pull the relay and see if it still blows the fuse to split the possible location of the short in half. If It still pops the fuse it is likely on the multi-function location, and if it doesn't it is likely on the headlight side of the relay.

How to find an electrical disturbance in 1998 ford expedition

Normally this condition is the result of a poor body ground connection. Testing for this can be deceiving. At the static(nothing on) condition, testing can show a good ground. However when a circuit is excited, it has a determined resistance and a set current flow. If the ground connection to this or a branch circuit is loose, corroded, or broken wire. This will allow just enough connection to show as being good, but not good enough to complete the circuit with the required amount of connection when energized.

Left headlight, dash lights, and both tail lights do no illuminate. brake lights and high beams work fine. what would cause this to happen, fuses are good.

Most certainly a wiring fault, you need a wiring diagram, these items are related as in all on same circuit. Check rear of fuse box.

Have a 2004 Peterbilt 379, headlight setting is terrible, tried setting them by eye but just not right, does any body have any specs or ideas?

Yes, if you are running over- the- road just stop in a State that has vehicle inspections and they can set the lights to their specs. In those States that have an inspection setting the headlight aim is part of the job.

Next method, park your unit about 20 feet from a garage door or the side of a building or carwash. Use some tape or pencil and make 2 crosses. The passenger side is allowed to be high and slightly to the right. A correctly aimed right headlight will focus on the curb or lane marker with the right headlight spot-on the lane marker. This will mean you will be safely within your lane on the right side of your truck as long as the headlight hits the lane marker.

For the left light it is suppose to be almost straight ahead and not tipped out to oncoming traffic. In some States the left light is turned slightly towards the center of your truck. You can check against the crosses you put on the surface of the building and watch the beams move as you adjust the lights. Use some chalk to mark where the tires were so you can get into the same spot.

I had to do some Vehicle Inspections in Texas years ago. I want to say the headlights were suppose to be 42" high at 20 feet, but you have a Peterbuilt. And now some of the cars are barely 48" high.

Tail lights stay on when car is off

If tail lights are on, it will be a faulty headlight switch. I would think they are your brake lights instead for its common for the brake light switch to cause this when at fault. Rarely headlight switches will do that
