Hi all I have a Cherokee jeep 2.4 sport. 2002. manual gear box when I go into reverse it starts to shudder which is increased if I turn the steering wheel. if I just go straight back it seem to be OK or not so bad does anyone have any ideas or have you had the same trouble. hope this is not going to be another arm and leg job. regards Richard

Hello Richard
Have you looked at all your checked your universal joints & your front hubs as you may have a small problem with your hubs.
the best way to test this is to lift the Jeep off all 4 wheel then do a full Visual check & test on your Jeep with it running & not running.
PLEASE MAKE SURE THE JEEP IS UP SAFE.
before getting under it.

Hope ti helps

POWER STEERING GEAR BOX LEAK, I have a leak on the gear box, which appears to come from where the steering column/shaft enters the gear box. Does anyone know how to repair such a leak, what are...

would imagine their is just a oil seal their ,but whats causing the pressure behind the seal to make it leak ,yes i have repaired power steering boxes befoe now but on commercial vehicles 30+years ago ,principle still the same no doubt but i would advise you to get one from a scrapyard so vehicle is usable then when time permits have a play with the old one ,because you may find that its its cheaper to replace than repair with the cost of the spares

2002 grand cherokee laredo humming/grinding

sounds like you have a problem with one of your lines on your power steering or one of its components. the grinding noise could also be one of your pulleys that have gone bad too. check your steering assemby gear box.

Revers

If you have a master and/or slave cylinder, the tell-tale signs of it going out is you start having problems with it going into reverse then into first. The problem advances rather quickly if this is the problem. First, I would thy aligning the pulley where the fan(?) belt is jumping over it and adjusting the tension ever so slightly. Good luck. I hope it's not the master/slave cylinder. Oh, you might also try to eliminate where the linkage comes to hook onto the engine and be sure it is securely on the arm and that the linkage cable itself is not stretched or worn.

Shudder ? when I apply reverse

It sounds like one or two things could be the problem First check the u-joints but this would probably also give you vibration in drive,The most likely problem would either be the carrier bearing (if it is a two piece drive shaft.) Or the trans mount loose or need of replacement....My money is on the trans mount which is fairly easy to replace and should not set you back more than $75....Good Luck and please rate my diagnosis cause it really helps with future diagnostics... Thank you
