take the upper plastic part completely off . i think its just one screw holding it . after doing that you chould be able to see the plastic shaft in side the metal rod. that is the part which works with the button that broke off. press it down and put it in park also try to put that key in there at the same toime if it dont work. get another upper part from the junk yard and replace it.

I got one but haven't had a chance to put it on. I kinda like my smaller gear shift! It will make people think twice about stealing my car!!

The shift should have a small screw or pin holding it on .once you remove the handle part you should be able you stick a thin screw driver down the tube and shift it

I did that and it still won't shift into park. The entire knob on the gear shift has broken off and is in a million peices inside the shifter.

There should be a place to put key in near the shifter. put the key in and put it back in park.

SOURCE: 94 honda accord hard to shift from park

You seem to have two (2) separate problems one may be a BAD brake light switch this switch is mounted at the top of BRAKE pedal and control the locking mechanism on gear shifter(safety component-for example if a kid is sitting in seat with vehicle running he/she will NOT be able to put vehicle in gear without stepping on brake). The other problem is a BAD shifter cable-this cable moves the selector in the transmission when you move shift knob. Good luck and thanks for using FIX YA

SOURCE: My honda accord 2003 automatic wont let me put

Sounds like your brake interlock is not working. You can manually override it. Check your owners manual, but there should be a small square around the trim around the shifter. Pry up the square and there is a release mechanism to manually release the solenoid. It should be covered in your owners manual how to override it.
I think to replace it you need to take apart the shifter trim.

This is replaceable but you should be able to put a screw driver into the broken off part and still push the engagement button for some ghetto shifting.

When I started my 2002 Dodge Durango 4.7L and try to put it into 'DRIVE' it got locked up and I couldn't put it into ANY gear. I had someone tell me it may possibly be the gear linkage. HE

Well, if the problem is in the linkage between the trans and the shifter, you should be able to disconnect the linkage or cable and move the shift rod in the transmission by hand.
Make sure the parking brake is set since it won't be in park.

The gear shift is locked in place and will not shift into reverse. The vehicle has a shift release button on the console to the right of the shifter. When depressed the button unlocks the shifter and the...

It has a brake-transaxle shift interlock. You should just push the brake in to shift, but if you have done that, and it still won't shift, with foot on the brake, push the shifter all the way into park. Sometimes they don't always go into park all the way. Also if you park on a hill, it puts pressure on the btsi, so you cant shift it. Have someone push the vehicle back, just enough to take the pressure off and it should shift. I had this happen to me with my Grand Am.

there is a safety device that prevents putting the gear shift in park without the brakes pressed(saves park in your transmission so it isnt stripped accidently) it could be broke
