Probably the problem is not the filters but de seal al filter connection. try using mild to hard ruber sealing and reinstall the filter. Of course you have to check also the sealing torke you applied.

SOURCE: manual transmission, but a short red tipped dipstick, looks like tranny fluid?

I have a 1998 saturn with a manual transmission and it took me quite some time to locate the dip stick. it is located on top of the gearbox close to the brake resevoir where the linkeage connects. it has a red plastic clip on top of the dip stick and submerges verticaly into the gearbox and is about six inches long. the red clip can easliy be hidden with black dirt and not seen. do not confuse this with the clutch reservoir fluid located to the right of the brake master cylnder. good luck.

SOURCE: how do you check the transmission fluid in a 200

YOUR TRANSMISSION DONT HAVE A DIP STICK THE GARAGE HAS TO RAISE CAR LEVEL ON A LIFT THEY HAVE TO REMOVE A PLUG ON TRANSMISSION WHILE CAR IS RUNNING.WHEN PLUG IS REMOVED IF NO FLUID DONT COME OUT.YOU NEED TO ADD MORE TRANSMISSION FLUID.IF LITTLE DRIP YOU OKAY.TOO MUCH COME OUT YOU ARE OVER FILL.THESE TRANSMISSION ONLY TIME YOU CHECK FLUID IF YOU HAVE SHIFTING PROBLEMS OR TRANSMISSION LEAKS.

SOURCE: fuse box diagram for 1998 saturn sl

There is an interior fuse panel just to the left of the passenger's left knee. The cover It is held on by velcro. After you take off the cover, you will see a diagram on the inside of the cover telling you which fuse is for what. This is covered in your manual, which is in the glovebox. If you do not have a manual you can get one off ebay for a few bucks.

Your tranny is on the right bottom of the engine. There should be a dipstick in that area. Same place you add the fluid.

Sounds to me like you need to change the transmission fluid the filter is under the air filter box and the drain plug is a 17mm on the bottom of the trans closest to the engine about mid ways between the car warm the car up good then drain the fluid beware the fluid will be hot the filter is like a oil filter it just unscrews fill with proper fluid do not over fill hope this helps you

I have a 92 Saturn SL-1 and it runs fairly smoothly except the auto. transmission shifts hard at times. However, the gas mileage has dropped to probably 15 mi per gallon. I have replaced the fuel filter,...

Try changing fluid and filter. If this does not correct it, then test the vacuum pressure in the vacuum controlled actuator and the circuit on the tranny. If it turns out ok, then tranny servo or other internal part may be faulty

1999 Saturn SL2 shifting problems

I also have a 1999 sl2 saturn . I was having about the same problem but mine also did not want to go into reverse somtimes as well . Ichanged my fluid and filter and put in a good trans conditioner and just about all my trouble went away. The trans filter is just like a oil filter it just screws on the outside of the transmission . It is located down under the air filter housing, and the fluid plug is right on the bottom of the trans.
