Mercury Cougar 1999 V6 Starting problem.

Hi I have a 1999 Mercury cougar which has started troubling me every morning. I got it checked last nov and as suggested replaced the batteries.  It worked nicely for a week or so and suddenly the same problem started again.  It just keep on making the strange sound (like thick .. thick.. ). I just got it checked again and the mechanic says its Alternator needs to be replaced and battery is also week. I surfed the net and found this trouble (http://www.fixya.com/cars/t900298-99_mercury_cougar_alternator) with 1999 Cougar  so can anybody guide me how to deal with it.

To remove the alternator, you have to remove the serpentine belt. They have a tensioner in which you place a socket wrench and pull on it and it loosens the belt. Before removing the belt notice how it is routed. Some vehicles have a diagram on the hood or on the front near the grill. You take the belt off. Then you remove the alternator by removing the bolts attaching the alternator to the engine. There are two or three bolts you have to remove. Two of them are fairly big bolts. About a size 14 metric or so. Disconnect the negative battery cable battery so you won't hit any grounds. Then take off the plugs from the alternator and the small nuts that hold the wires. Notice how they are placed before removing so you can know where each plug goes. Then replace the new alternator. Plug it back up and install the same way you took it out.Replace the belt starting from the left to right and pull on the tensioner and reinstall.

take your car to autozone. It might be your alternator. It is better if you take off the alternator to have it tested, just incase it is a parasitic leak. This happened to my navigator 2 days ago. It was wierd because it ran fine when it was warm outside. But kept killing by battery when it was cold!

V6 ? 4CYL? Have you verified SPARK? Did anyone check the "fuel pump inertia switch?" Its in the right front kick panel. If it was a "Anti-theft Issue" the light would be on or flashing.
