Question about 1997 Chevrolet Cavalier

1 Answer

97 Cavalier overheats when idling..fan not working..replaced thermostat and relay sensor..Fan works when straight wired.

2.2 l Cavalier, we replaced the water pump, relay sensor and thermostat but fan will still not kick on and car overheats. If the car runs idle for just a few minutes it will start to "gurgle" as coolant is bubbled out of overflow. Straight wired the fan and it will kick on fine. What else could it be?

relay sensor under hood was replaced with new..that was our first step after we straight wired fan and the fan came on, but straight wired is the only way fan works?

yesterday we put in a new thermostat, however we checked the old one and it opened up fine in boiling water. So since we had drained all coolant, we replaced with new, let car run and it done same thing after just a few short minutes...No fan kick on and car started making "gurgling" sound..oh and we also made sure there was no air in lines.

You may have a bad relay. Have you tested it to see if it is working or have you changed it out with a new one?

SOURCE: 99 cavalier overheats

I was just having the exact same problem with mine!! (my 1999 Chevrolet Cavalier)
It turned out that replacing all of the parts you mentioned, I just had an air bubble in my system and needed to run it with the cap off and fill it up with water as the engine ran and the air escaped.
Hope that helps you!

SOURCE: Have a 1997 Cavalier that the cooling fan will not

You may have air in the cooling system. You should have a bleeder screw on the thermostat housing or heater tube depending on what engine is in it. With vehicle off and engine cool, open bleeder screw and fill radiator with coolant until steady stream of coolant comes out of bleeder screw. If this does not work proceed with computer diag for a faulty sensor or ecm.

SOURCE: car overheats. i unplugged temp sensor and fans

If you unplug the coolant temp sensor the computer will turn on the fans because it doesn't know how warm the engine is. The computer is working like it is suppose to. I think you might have a bad coolant temp sender. If it was a problem with the fans or the relays, they wouldn't come on when you unplug the sensor, because the problem would still be there.

Why won't my cooling fan turn on (swapped thermostat, thermoswitch, fan really)(fans work when hard wired to battery). Causes car to overheat in idle.

depending on the year, there should be 3 relays that control the fans.
There's a rad fan relay (4 pins), an a/c condensor fan relay (4 pins), and a fan control relay (5 pins). This allows them to be run at low speed or high speed. Check the grounds behind/under the righthand headlamp.
Check Fuses 57, 58 (30 Amps) and fuse 46 (15A) under the hood, and fuse 3 (7.5 Amps) in the driver's underdash fusebox.

check the 25 amp fuse that had fan rad on it . Check the fuses under the dash. Finally replace the fan switch in the head as it may not be communicating with the CPU to put power through the fan relay

My car is running hot within 1 mile of me driving it...my fan kicks on when it wants to....i need to know how to fix it myself

replace coolant temp, sensor and check for a bad fan relay. check relay first ! to test the fans, run a wire from positive on battery to positive on fan connection. then run a wire from negative battery post to neg, connection on fan. if the motors are ok. the fans will turn on. and make sure you have 12 volts going to fan motors. check relay first!! the fans on a typical engine only work when idling or going slow to prevent it from heating up. have a good day!! make sure there is no coolant leaks anywhere!! this will cause it to overheat also. if need be replace coolant pressure cap on overflow, might not be holding pressure.

Car will overheat while at idle

yes the head gaskets leaking on modern aluminum head engines is all to common. never overheat them, if they start to get hot shut it down and find out why, it can of course be the fans and plugged radiators or faulty thermostats but sounds like in your case the head gasket is leaking and combustion gas is entering the cooling system and this causes an overheat

Cooling fan wont work

The water temp sensor is located near the thermostat housing. This sensor is what tells the ECM to turn the fan on/off. The water temp sending unit is located near the same area. You know you have the correct sensor is because the water temp sensor has a 2 prong plug. The water temp sending unit only has 1 prong.
