Low beam lights wont turn on, malfunction light indicator illuminates

The malfunction light came on, I noticed that the low beam lights wouldn't turn on. Also my remote start wouldn't work after a couple times turning the vehicle on and driving. I removed the negative post on my battery to reset, which solved my remote start issue...but I still cant get my low beams to turn on. High beams and fog lights work fine still. Malfunction light is off, for now. I tried the key reset, which gave me no codes, just said "-DONE-" and that I need an oil change, which isn't correct because I just had one done a month ago. Any help is greatly appreciated!

    I disconnected the negative battery post for 30 minutes, then reconnected. Fixed the malfunction light and low beams, but the fog lights wouldn't work with the low beams at the beginning. Now everything works fine.... so I'm unsure if I've solved the problem or just delayed the inevitable. Also, it still says I need an oil change when the vehicle starts, which I know is incorrect.

Your computer box might be worn out or the CBM controll body module.
depend on what kind of car you got.. some are easy to change that and some are hard. take it to a auto zone or a shop for scan tool test for free.

The indicator on the dash is connected directly to the high beams bulbs wiring so your problem is in the relay, it's burned out and it sticks in a partially closed position. This explains also why the high beams are dimmer than the low ones - the contacts on the relay are burned out and offer a much greater resistance to the flow of current, hence lower light.
Replace it.

on a lot of vehicles theres a fuse for low and high beam headlights. could be a relay also. check the fuses in the fuse box. if both headlights have been changed and the fuses or relay are ok, then the problem is either in wiring or a bad dimmer switch. have a good day !!

Do you know anything about automotive electronics ? Electronic control modules .
Headlamp ON/OFF control is determined by the body control module (BCM) by a signal on the headlamp switch on input circuit when the headlamp switch is in the HEAD position. When the headlamp switch is in the AUTO position, the BCM determines headlamps ON/OFF by the voltage from the ambient light sensor.
If the headlight switch is left in the ON position, the inadvertent power control feature will turn OFF the headlights approximately 10 minutes after the ignition switch is turned to the OFF position. If the driver places the headlight switch in the ON position after the ignition switch has been turned OFF, or if the ignition switch is in the ACCY position, the headlights will remain ON until turned OFF or the battery runs dead.
The high beam indicator is illuminated when the instrument cluster receives a GMLAN serial data message from the BCM that the high beams are illuminated.
High Beams
The high beam headlamps receive voltage from the headlamp high relay located in the underhood fuse block. The BCM controls the relay on the headlamp high beam relay control circuit. High beam control is determined by a signal on the headlamp dimmer switch signal circuit from the multifunction switch. When the headlamp dimmer switch signal circuit is grounded, the BCM grounds the headlamp high beam relay control circuit, illuminating the high beam headlamps. The right and left high beam circuits are independent and are fused independently in the underhood fuse block.
Low Beams - Standard
The low beam headlamps receive voltage from the headlamp low beam relay located in the underhood fuse block. The BCM controls the relay on the headlamp low beam relay control circuit. Low beam control is determined by a signal on the headlamp dimmer switch signal circuit from the multifunction switch. When the headlamp dimmer switch signal circuit is open, the BCM grounds the headlamp low beam relay control circuit, illuminating the low beam headlamps. The right and left low beam circuits are independent are fused independently in the underhood fuse block.

Hooking up a factory scan tool an checking DTC'S - diagnostic trouble codes would be the very first step in trouble shooting this problem .

What do the Dashboard Symbols Mean?


I have a mini cooper and every so often symbols come on when I first start up the car. Evidently this is the only time these symbols come on (versus staying on if there is a problem) which is a hassle, because its hard to remember what they are. But here is a list I found to help other Mini drivers like myself:

  1. Oil Pressure Warning Light. This symbol light usually is turned on when the ECU of the car detects any problem with the oil pressure. It usually indicates that the engine oil level is too low. Solution: Stop the car immediately, switch off the engine, and wait until the engine is cool down, top up the engine oil if the level is low. If the light is still on, consult any mechanic. P/S: This light is usually on when you switch on the ignition and it should be gone as soon as the engine starts.
  2. Battery Charge Warning Light. If the light is on during the car is running, it indicates that the car batteryis not charge. It could be some faulty of the charging system. Solution: Consult any mechanic.
  3. Brake System Warning Light. If the e-brake or handbrake is engaged, the light will on. If the light remains illuminated after the handbrake is released, it may indicate brake fluid level is low. If the fluid level is correct, it may be the sensor fault.
  4. ABS Warning Light. If the light is on while driving, it indicates a malfunction of the ABS system.Solution: Consult a mechanic as soon as possible.
  5. Warning light - Unidentified problem. Computer or ECU in the car sometimes hardly knows what the problem is. It usually indicates the car needs to be serviced.
  6. Engine Warning Light/OBD Indicator. You can always see this symbol in mostthe cars. If the light is on, it indicates that the car should be serviced. It could probably the engine malfunction or some other problems related to the car engine.

  8. High Beam Light. This symbol light is on when the driver turn on the high beam mode of the headlights. If the light is on when high beam is off, it could be the sensor's fault.
  9. Windshield Wash Symbols. Most of the new car has windshield wash, therefore this icon is common for most of the cars. The symbol notifies the driver when the windshield wipers are activated.
  10. Windshield Defrost. It is turned on once the driver presses the windshield defrost button.

  1. Fuel Filter Water Trap. This symbol is normal but ONLY for diesel engines car. If the light is on while driving the car, it indicates water is detected in the fuel filter. Solution: It is usually safe to drive the car but have to get the water in the fuel filter drained off as soon as possible.
  2. Temperature Warning Light. The symbol looks like a thermometer. It warns the driver that the engine is overheating. Solution: Find a safe place and stop the car immediately.
  3. Fog Beam Indicator. This is pretty basic and pretty simple. If the fog beam is on, the symbol illuminates.

No low beam. Good high beam. No day lights. What's wrong?


No on the fuse . The LH HDLP and RH HDLP fuse in the fuse block - under hood, supply battery positive voltage to both low and high beam lamps at all times. For manual operation, when the headlamp switch is in the ON position, the headlamp switch supplies ground directly to the headlamps and to the body control module (BCM) on the headlamp low or high beam signal circuit, depending on the position of the headlamp dimmer switch. The BCM uses this signal to determine if the conditions are present to illuminate the daytime running lamps or park lamps.
The headlamps may be turned on 2 different ways. First, when the driver places the headlamp switch in the ON position, for manual operation. Second, with the headlamp switch placed in the OFF position activating automatic lamp control (ALC).For ALC operation, the BCM receives a signal from the ambient light sensor indicating a low or high ambient, outside, light level. Under low light conditions the BCM grounds the headlamp relay control circuit energizing the headlamp control relay. The now closed relay supplies ground through the headlamp switch to the headlamps and the BCM on the headlamp low or high beam signal circuit, depending on the position of the headlamp dimmer switch. When the BCM grounds the headlamp relay control circuit it also grounds the park lamp relay control circuit illuminating the park lamps. The headlamp relay is grounded at G203.
Daytime Running Lamps (DRL)
The low beam headlamps operate at reduced intensity when in daytime running lamps (DRL) mode. The ground circuit to the switch side of the DRL relay has a resistor in-line to reduce the intensity of the low beam headlamps for DRL operation. The body control module (BCM) receives a signal from the ambient light sensor indicating a low or high ambient, outside, light level. Under daylight conditions the BCM grounds the DRL relay control circuit energizing the DRL control relay. The now closed relay supplies ground directly to the low beam headlamps and to the BCM on the headlamp low beam signal circuit. The low beam headlamps now illuminate with reduced intensity. The DRL relay is grounded at G203. Any time the headlamps are illuminated the DRL will not illuminate. Manual park lamps do not effect DRL operation.

Why don't lights work?


Both the headlight switch and the BCM provide a ground, or control circuit, to the headlight relay coil circuit for manual or automatic headlamp operation. When you place the headlamp switch in the OFF position, and the ambient light sensor indicates low light conditions, the BCM energizes the headlamp relay for low beam operation. You may switch the headlights to high beam by pulling the dimmer switch handle toward you until the dimmer switch is activated. When the dimmer switch is placed in the HIGH position, the indicator lamp input to the BCM is pulled low. The BCM then sends a class 2 message to the instrument cluster in order to illuminate the high beam indicator lamp.

Headlamps
You can use the headlamps two different ways.

Place the headlamp switch in the HEAD position for normal operations

Place the headlamp switch in the OFF position for automatic lamp control (ALC) operation. During ALC the low beam headlamps are ON for daytime running lamp (DRL) operation in daylight conditions at reduced intensity or low beam headlamps ON at full intensity with exterior park lamps ON in low light conditions. The ambient light sensor is a light-sensitive transistor that varies its voltage signal to the body control module (BCM) in response to changes in the outside (ambient) light level. When the BCM receives this signal the BCM turns ON just the low beam headlamps at reduced intensity for the daytime running lamp (DRL) operation. A resistor wire is used (CKT312) to reduced the voltage which reduces the light intensity for the DRL's function. The ambient light sensor can also turn ON the low beam headlamps and the exterior lamps for automatic lamp control (ALC). Any function or condition that turns ON the headlamps will cancel the DRL operation (this means no reduced voltage to the low beam lights). Thirty seconds after you start the engine with the headlamp switch in the OFF position, the DRL will perform one of two actions:

DTC B2645 Ambient Light Circuit
The body control module (BCM) monitors the ambient light sensor signal circuit in order to determine if the daytime running lights (DRL) or the auto headlights (ALC) should be turned ON in the AUTO mode. When the BCM senses the ambient light sensor voltage is between 1.75-4.9 volts, either the DRL will be commanded ON or the ALC will be commanded ON.

  1. Turn ON the headlamps.
  2. Ensure that the headlamp dimmer switch is in the LOW position.

Adjust the dipped lights on a hyundai teracan


the bulbs are set in the reflector to get maximum illumination and cannot be adjusted. What you have to adjust is high beam and the low beam will be automatically adjusted. Th adjust high beam (after dark) place the vehicle on level ground about 3 feet from a wall. Turn on high beam and you will notice where the centre of the beam is on the wall That centre has to be slightly below the centre of the lights ( about 1 inch) The centre should be directly in front of the lights and not out to the side of the vehicle. When the lights are correctly adjusted then low beam will be in the correct position.

Daytime running light module location 2001 impala


The daytime running lamps in your 2001 Chevrolet Impala are controlled by the Body Control Module (BCM) Here is a description of how the system works:

The ambient light sensor is a light-sensitive transistor that varies its voltage signal to the Body Control Module (BCM) in response to changes in the outside (ambient) light level. When the BCM receives this signal, the BCM turns ON either the DRL or the headlamp relay for auto headlamp operation. Any function or condition that turns ON the headlamps will cancel the DRL operation.
Thirty seconds after you start the ignition with the headlamp switch set in the OFF position, the DRL will perform one of two actions:

Illuminate the high beam headlights at a reduced intensity in daylight conditions
Illuminate the low beam headlights in low light conditions
The DRL/EXT lamps fuse in the top of the engine fuse block supplies battery positive voltage to both the DRL switch contacts and to the DRL relay coil. When the BCM energizes the DRL relay coil, current flows through the right high beam lamp, to the left hand high beam lamp, to the energized DRL relay switch contacts, to ground G101.
The high beam headlamps are now in series, and split the voltage so that the headlamps illuminate at halt intensity. The DRL operates when the ignition switch is in the RUN position, and the parking brake is not set or the transmission is not in park. When these conditions have been met and the ambient light sensor indicates daytime conditions, the DRL will illuminate.
