On the side of your transmission will be a switch with several wires coming out of it. This is your reverse switch that turns on your reverse lights and most likely needs to be replaced

1992 Buick LaSabre engine lite!

I would assume you never retrieved the codes
& googled them-- to find out the system with the
possible fault
We have had Check Lights for over 30 years,
nothing new there, just remember you have an
OBD1 System (1981 thru 1995) OBD2 (1996 thru 2014)
Put the codes you get into Google along with your vehicle
for the problems & solutions

89 lasabre randomly wont start like a bad connection. SOmeone mentioned it might be the drive shaft sensor. My LaSabra has 147,000 miles. Any ideas??

I would start at the starter relay have you ever changed your starter it may be that the brushes in the starter are worn way down preventing a good connection at times

1998 buick lasabre has a vapor coming from exhaust

Usually this is an indication of water in the oil, pull your oil level dipstick and see if you see water bubbles on the stick.
If so it is probably a blown head gasket.

Check the fuses. Usually Located Under the Dash On The Driver Side. If that doesnt seem to solve the problem, The Relay Switch might be broken.

Just get a new compressor with one on it. Changing the clutch is a waste of time and your money.
