SOURCE: Brake Ajustment on a 1998 Chevy 1500

The rear drum style brakes can be adjusted by removing the rubber plug on the back of the plate, and using a brake tool or flathead you can turn the "star wheel" adjuster to move the shoes closer or further from the drum.

hope this helps! please rate!

SOURCE: emergency break cable broke on 2004 silverado

I had the same problem on my 2003. Open the driver door all the way. Get on your knees just outside the door. Follow the plastic tub that holds the parking brake release cable inside the truck. Start from the release lever and follow to the end of the tube. There will be a metal lever that the cable was attached to before it broke. You have to pull that lever with your hand to release the parking brake. Very Important!!!...Hold the parking brake activation pedal with your other hand when you release the brake. Let the pedal out slowly when you pull the metal release lever. The pedal will come back very fast and you could injure yourself if you are not careful. Good luck!

SOURCE: 2000 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 brake release cable

Same thing happened to me on my 2000 silverado July 3, 2009.
There is a release next to the parking brake pedal. You have to reach way under the dash but it has worked for me for the last month. I have the part to fix it but haven't had the time.

Airbag light on

You have 2 separate problems. If the airbag light is on, then the control unit needs to be serviced. You will need to read the code from your diagnostic port. After that, replace the component indicated by the code.

The brake light could be low fluid in the reservoir or an indication that the emergency brake cable has stretched and you no longer get enough tension to operate the switch. Check the reservoir first. If that does not fix it, play with the emergency brake to see if you can get the light to go off. If you can, then you need to find the adjuster on the cable and tighten it.

My emergency brake cable broke with the brake engaged. how do i disengage it so i can get to a garage?

If the emergency brake cable broke, then the brake should disengage by itself, unless there is rust in the braking system preventing it from doing so.

An engaged brake needs tension on the cable to continue to hold the vehicle still.

You could have it towed by a flat bed that slowly draws the car up onto its flat bed, even if the brakes or park was engaged. Allow the tow truck operator to worry about this problem.

Good luck on getting your vehicle to the garage.

Emergancy brake wont work. after replacing back drum brakes

There is a cable run to the back brake shoes which was probably not reconnected properly. If you want to further discuss, let me know.

Your sensor could be on the bar that distributes the fluid to your wheels. If it is, that equalizer bar could have some air in it. Or the sensor could be bad, and sometimes you just have to reset the system, try pulling the negative battery cable off for five minutes and then putting it back on.
