Question about Cars & Trucks

1 Answer

Hi All, I am really need of advice, my vw golf 2002, se convertible keeps cutting out. ( loses power when slowing down or driving off) I have taken into garage so many time who have tested it and said car is fine, however every time I drive it within 15 to 20 min it cuts out and sometime does not start. But when it does start it back fires with a loud bang. Forgot to mention engine management light was on , first it said throttle, they gave it a clean. And said call was ok, but same issues cut out. Then they said need to replace throttle body which I did, thinking that was the problem. But no, took my newborn baby and family out for the first time and my car cut out at a busy junction. Lucky police was there and they helped me out. Took it back to garage and they bloody can't figure out what the issues it. Please not after changing my throttle body I had no engine management light on. The garage guy goes it might be my immobiliser. But his not sure???

You really think so? Is the why you think my car keeps cutting out within 10 min of running? Car is really pissing me off, thinking of taking it to main dealer since the garage can't figure out why it's cutting out. Many thanks for your assistant.

try cleaning your battery terminals and tightening them. if that doesnt solve the problem your battery or alternator may be dying, some auto parts stores will do a charging system check for free that will tell you if one or the other is bad.

Vw golf cutting out

No it is impossible to say without testing the vehicle and doing a complete analysis with the correct diagnostic equipment.

These vehicle have numerous electrical faults that sometimes the VW dealer service centres cannot diagnose. What has been happening to you is the mechanics have been guessing what the problem is and just changing things without really identifying the actual cause - as you have now found. These are very unreliable cars so do not be fooled by the "german quality" label that people frequently and wrongly apply to German cars.

If you want and need a reliable car I would recommend you get rid of this Golf and get yourself a Mazda (and have any prospective used car thoroughly inspected before biuying). If you keep the Golf I guarantee it will give you much grief and cost you plenty more repairs.

Hi crossley 82
Check the engine coolant sensor. This sensor controls the fuel / air mixture, and was a common problem on that model.

Need to hook up a VW scanner or equivalent so you can isolate where it's not functioning properly from the DTC (display trouble code) stored in it's memory.

2002 VW Polo - EPC Light and Loss of Power

Hi,
It is a wiring fault, but they are looking on the wrong end. You will need to have a VW dealer "repin" the electrical connector at the throttle body. What this means is, the dealer will take apart the connector, cut off the old pins and crimp on new ones and reassemble the connector. This is a common problem on drive by wire VW's. The dealer has a bulletin on the problem and I don't know why they missed it. They will probably have to order the connector kit however. Good luck!

VW Golf MK3 1996 P - Car cuts out when slowing down. Battery and Oil lights come on. Restart the car then starts juggering. Its not a fluid purring from the engine.

i would start by cleaning out the throttle body. they collect soot and not have to be a lot either for it to mess up the idle speed, i had trhis on mine soon as i dipped the clutch to slow down the rpm dropped to about 400 to stall, i cleaned throttle body out ( taking air intake off and wipe round inside and the butterfly will be enough) and now it idles and the rpm dont drop below 900
