Question about 1999 Chevrolet Silverado 1500
Is it necessary to remove the entire door panel to install a new inside door handle? The handle broke off at the edge of the door.
On almost all GM's there will be a screw in the recess that the handle sits in. After removing this screw, gently wiggle this cup out of it's hole and there should be a metal rod attached to the back of it with a small clip. Unclip this and it's out - installation is the reverse. Just don't lose the clip or let the linkage rod fall down inside or you will have to remove the door panel. It shouldn't take five minutes to replace and most parts stores now carry GM door handle assemblies. Good Luck!

There are many posts on these door handles breaking, it is a common problem.
Here is a great link to remove the interior door panel, necessary to replace the door handle assembly. It is not a big job.

I bought the replacement handle assembly from the local Advance Auto Parts store. It was a perfect match for the gray interior of my 1999 Suburban, and cost only $16.
You will have to drill out a rivet to remove the old assembly, but it can be replaced with a simple machine screw when re-installing the new handle assembly. The assembly fits into the door very tightly with some teeth that you will see on the back of the replacment unit, which will also help you see how the old once will need to slide in order to be removed one the rivet is drilled out. All in all, this whole repair should take about an hour. And it is great not to have to roll down the window to get out any more!
yes because everything is made of plastic
