all of you have great ideas but it doesn't seem like there is just one definite answer. I was hoping to find atleast a reason and work back from there and I figured if it was that I needed a new clutch that I would have trouble shifting. If anyone else has or had this issue please keep me posted! I will keep checking back and trying everyones solutions until something works.

Check the linkage for any slack. if the clutch is very old, it might be time to replace it, at which time the mechanic would fix it up to where it will give resistance the whole way.

SOURCE: 1999 Saturn SL2 shifting problems

I also have a 1999 sl2 saturn . I was having about the same problem but mine also did not want to go into reverse somtimes as well . Ichanged my fluid and filter and put in a good trans conditioner and just about all my trouble went away. The trans filter is just like a oil filter it just screws on the outside of the transmission . It is located down under the air filter housing, and the fluid plug is right on the bottom of the trans.

SOURCE: shifting and or clutch

If there is a hydraulic clutch in that car, check the master cylinder for the clutch and see if it's full of fluid, if it is, you might have a bad slave valve.

SOURCE: if the clutch slave cylinder on my 2005 Saturn Vue

No its internal meaning that its in the bell housing. The bell housing is bolted to the gearbox to hous the clutch befor being bolted to the engine. It has no seal on it.So when your slave cylinder leaks,The fluid drips from the bell housing. And the only way to get at it is to remove the gearbox.

Why is my clutch sticking to the floor and why won't it shift into gear when the car is on?

Ok Matt,I got you covered, when your clutch master cylinder goes empty, your clutch slave is leaking and not holding pressure, you can fill reservoir and bleed to get you home,I've did it in my 85 nissan 720 4x4 before, you can have someone pump clutch pedal a few times and hold to floor and you open bleeder valve at slave cylinder till air is gone, just don't let resevoir get low. Here is a link to bleeding, your slave cylinder is bolted to side of transmission with 2 bolts.Be careful and don't strip bleeder screw, you can get part at Autozone, also get dot 3 brake fluid, this autozone iis not showing a guide to replace, here's one from a 85 nissan, very similar.

Clutch will not engage when it was engaging perfectly to begin with.

Your car has a hydraulic clutch release system, it is defective, either the master or slave cylinder is leaking or pulling in air and this causes the clutch pedal to go to the floor.

make sure the guide pins are out of the way and the pilot bearing is lube just a little bit . get a flash light you see where the clutch fork is that will be the area we will peek into ,get 2 phillip screw driver, put the trans on get it in the pressure plate area, peek into the clutch area get the shaft straight put the phillip screw driver in one of the bolt holes and in the other now when you get it in one inch of where you are closing put in one bolt on each side not tighten just enough that it doesnt drop on you, you have enough room to turn the flywheel use a screw driver, just a little turn wiggle and push in the transmission mke sure nothing is in the way, lift up at the tail end up and down side to side pushing in making sure nothing in the way here is another way make absolutly sure nothing is in the way guide pins line up bolt it in evenly its risky make sure its in nuetral

Clutch goes all the way down to the floor, unable ...

Does the clutch pedal offer any resistance? The clutch and brake system use the same reservoir, there is a hose coming out from the side of the reservoir that goes over to the clutch master cylinder. Sometimes the brake fluid level goes low as brake pads wear and lowers the fluid level too low to work the clutch. On the front side of the transmission, is a clutch slave cylinder, check it for leaks, if it leaks replace it. Hope this helps, let me know.

I HAVE A FORD FALCON AU 1998 MODEL THE CLUTCH PEDEL WENT STRAIGHT TO THE FLOOR THE OTHER NIGHT I HAD TO FORCE IT INTO GEAR TO GET IT HOME VERY SLOWLY HOW DO I FIX IT IM FEMALE DONT HOLD THAT AGAINST ME...

first ck the clutch fluid. if its low refill it with brake fluid, this is as much as you can do on your own, unless you can find someone to "bleed" the air out of the system. If it is low, the fluid had to leak out. you will need a repair shop to check and repair the clutch hydraulic system. most likely you will need to replace the clutch master and slave cylinder.

Need to know how to bleed clutch for 1995 ford ranger

Does the clutch have the outer clutch slave or is it inside the clutch plate area, to know look on the left or right side for a clutch slave cylinder if it does not have one it's internal and a pain. If it has an out side one fill the master reservoir then go under the truck and crack open the bleed valve on the cylinder have someone pres the clutch pedal all the way down and hold it to the floor, then close bleed valve then allow the clutch back up and have them push it to the floor open bleed valve and close when all air comes out do this till the arm moves it's full travel about 2 inches. And if its one with a master inside the transmission it has to be power bleed and normally you can’t do it without pulling the transmission.

Clutch goes to floor will not engage

The bleeder is located on the slave cylinder at the bell housing of the transmission. Follow the clutch pressure line down to the bell housing, and you will find the bleeder. To bleed the system properly, you will need to have someone push the clutch in, and hold it until you open the bleeder, and close it again. Repeat steps until you have a good solid clutch pedal. Make sure to not let the fluid level in the reservoir get too low as it can **** in air, and you have to start all over.
