Question about 1999 Dodge Grand Caravan

No interior lights come on when doors are opened. Very dim instrument panel lights.

Checked all fuses, cleaned battery terminals, etc. The interior lights DO work if the dashboard switch is operated to turn them on, no automatic operation when the doors are opened. Also, all instrument panel lights are very dim.

    Thanks Cameron. This was the dimmer switch I was talking about when I said that I was able to get the interior lights to work. It's turned all the way up.

Theres probably a switch off to the left of the steering wheel (probably some sort of wheel looking switch for the brightness)

check the fuses in the left kick panel, (by your left foot when in the drivers seat) the interior lighting fuse in there, also try putting fuses in the missing slots temporally. if you bought the car used some may have removed it because of a dome lamps staying on issue which is covered by a recall if you find that to be the case

Make sure that when you check the fuses you use a test light applied to both sides of the fuse you are testing.It can be very difficult to see a fuse that is blown when the fuse is blown near the edges. PS the dash fuse is by itself and needs to be checked when the light switch is on.

Interior Lamps Dimming
The second group includes lamps which may be dimmed. This group may use a combination of vacuum fluorescent (VF) illumination and incandescent lamps.
• Power window switches
• HVAC control head assembly

• The instrument panel cluster (IPC)
When the ignition switch is turned to the ON position, the vacuum fluorescent (VF) display (radio) turns on at maximum brightness. When the park lamps are ON all incandescent back lighting turn ON at the dimming level indicated by the IP dimmer switch. At the same time all vacuum fluorescent (VF) displays dim to match the indicated dimming level. When the headlamp switch is placed in the PARK position, the park lamp supply voltage circuit provides an input to the body control module (BCM). The BCM then sends a pulse width modulated (PWM) voltage to all the interior lamps. All the vacuum florescent (VF) and incandescent back lighting lamps are provided a specific voltage and are then grounded. When the headlight switch is turned to the PARK or HEADLAMP position, all incandescent back lighting turn on at the dimming level indicated by the IP dimmer switch. When the IP dimmer switch is moved from MIN to MAX, all vacuum fluorescent (VF) displays, as well as all incandescent back lighting respond from Minimum intensity to maximum brightness in response to the IP dimmer switch.

I would have it checked for DTC'S - diagnostic trouble codes stored in the BCM !
DTC B2624 Display Dimming Input Range/Performance
The body control module (BCM) supplies voltage to the instrument panel dimmer switch through the instrument panel dimmer switch signal circuit. The dimmer switch varies the voltage and returns the new voltage to the BCM through the dimmer switch signal return circuit. The BCM uses this voltage to determine the illumination level of the instrument panel lamps.

DTC B2625 Display Dimming Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) Output Circuit Range/Performance
The body control module (BCM) receives a variable voltage from the instrument panel (I/P) lamp dimmer switch. The BCM uses this signal in order to vary the illumination level of the I/P lamps. The I/P dimming lamps output from the BCM is a pulse width modulated voltage supply used to light the I/P lamps. If a malfunction occurs in the I/P dimming lamps output circuit, this DTC is set.

This includes those lamps that may be manually turned on by placing the interior lamp switch to the DOME position, or by opening a door or a compartment:
• Door courtesy lamps
• Footwell courtesy lamps
• Instrument panel (I/P) compartment lamp
• Overhead console courtesy lamps
• Reading courtesy lamps
• Rear compartment courtesy lamp
• Roof rail courtesy lamps
• Sunshade vanity mirror lamps

Interior Lamps Dimming
This group of interior lighting includes lamps which may be dimmed. This group uses a combination of class 2 controlled illumination and incandescent lamps:

When the I/P dimmer switch is moved from MIN to MAX, all class 2 displays and all incandescent back lighting respond from minimum intensity to maximum brightness.
The DIM supplies battery positive voltage to the coil side of the PRK LP relay in the rear fuse block.
When the I/P dimmer switch is moved from MIN to MAX, then the instrument panel module (IPM), W/CJ2, or climate control panel (CCP), W/C67, applies a message to the class 2 communication circuit to the DIM. The DIM then applies a ground to the park lamp relay control circuit. This energizes the PRK LAMP relay and allows battery positive voltage to be applied through the DIMR fuse to the DIM. The DIM then illuminates the following incandescent lamps through the incandescent dimming output circuit:
• Cigar lighter lamp
• DIC Switch
• Headlamp switch
• HUD switch
• HVAC control assembly
• IPC
• Radio
• Steering wheel controls
The DIM also applies a message to the following class 2 controlled illumination components:
• Drivers door module (DDM)
• HVAC control assembly
• IPC

The DDM will then send a message through the simple bus interface (SBI) to the RH front door module (RFDM). The door modules will then illuminate the following components through the incandescent dimming output circuit:

The ground for these components are provided from the DDM and RFDM.

Backup Lamp Circuit Description
Battery positive voltage (B+) is supplied at all times to the REVERSE relay coil through the rear fuse block. Battery positive voltage (B+) is supplied at all times from the rear fuse block NSBU Fuse to the REVERSE relay switch. The powertrain control module (PCM) sends a class 2 message to the rear integration module (RIM) indicating that the gear selector lever is in the REVERSE position. The dash integration module (DIM) sends a class 2 message through power moding that the ignition switch is in the ON position. When these conditions occur, the RIM grounds the REVERSE relay coil. The coil is energized, closing the switch contacts. This supplies battery positive voltage (B+) to the backup lamps. The backup lamps are both permanently grounded, so both backup lamps have power and ground, and then light.

Do you know about class 2 serial data communications between control modules ? Do you know there is a fuse box under the rear seat ?

Park Lamps
The dash integration module (DIM) supplies battery positive voltage (B+) to the PRK LP relay coil. When the headlamps or park lamps need to be on or when the ignition switch is in the ON position. Battery positive voltage (B+) is supplied at all times to the PRK LP relay switch. When the park lamps are to be active, the DIM grounds the PRK LP relay coil. The coil is energized, closing the switch contacts. Battery positive voltage (B+) is supplied to the rear fuse block RH PARK LP Fuse, LH PARK LP Fuse, and DIMR Fuse. The LH PARK LP Fuse supplies battery positive voltage (B+) to the LH park lamps. The LH PARK LP Fuse supplies battery positive voltage (B+) to the LH park lamps. The LH and RH park lamps are permanently grounded, so all park lamps have power and ground, and then light. The DIMR Fuse supplies battery positive voltage (B+) to the DIM park lamp input for interior lamps dimming, the license lamps, the underhood lamp, and the cornering lamps. The license lamps are permanently grounded, so both license lamps have power and ground, and then light.

The body control system consists of 3 modules:
• The dash integration module (DIM)
• The instrument panel module (IPM)
• The rear integration module (RIM)
Dash Integration Module (DIM)
Battery voltage is provided from the rear fuse block to the DIM. The module ground is wired to ground. Battery positive sense voltage is provided from the rear fuse block to the DIM. This battery input is referenced to the ground sense input at DIM which is wired to the battery negative terminal and to ground. These sense inputs are physically connected to the battery positive and negative terminals for accurate battery voltage readings. The DIM is wired to the class 2 serial data line. The various DIM input and output circuits are described in the corresponding functional areas as indicated on the DIM electrical schematics.
Instrument Panel Module (IPM)

Are you sure that all interior lights go off? Make sure the vanity mirrors actually go off when the doors are closed. Glove compartment light, map lights. Some had center console lights. Check for a short at the cigarette lighters. Use an ohm meter and check for continuity to ground at supply wires.

When the ignition is turned to the ON position, the body control module (BCM) provides a ground to the Inadvertent relay control circuit. This energizes the BATT RUNDOWN PROTECTION relay and applies battery positive voltage to I/P BRP fuse and to the TRK/ROOF/BRP fuse. Battery positive voltage is applied from the I/P BRP fuse to the I/P courtesy lamps, I/P compartment lamp and to the I/P compartment feed circuit to the BCM. Battery positive voltage is also applied from the TRK/ROOF/BRP fuse to the:

If the BCM receives a door lock or unlock input signal, the BCM will activate the BATT RUNDOWN PROTECTION relay, which provides battery positive voltage to all interior courtesy lamps. When any door is opened, the door jam switch contacts close and the BCM receives a door-open input signal. The BCM then applies a ground to the theater dimming ground control circuit illuminating the courtesy and dome lamps.
After all the doors are closed, the courtesy lamps remain illuminated for approximately 40 seconds. The courtesy lamps will also turn on and remain illuminated for approximately 15 seconds after the ignition key is removed, prior to any door being opened.
When the headlamp switch is placed in the DOME position, the BCM receives a ground signal. The BCM then applies a ground to the theater dimming ground control circuit. This illuminates the dome and roof rail lamps.
The courtesy lamps will normally turn off using the theater dimming feature. The BCM provides a pulse width modulated ground to all courtesy/reading, dome, and inside rear view mirror lamps for the theater dimming feature. The BCM will immediately turn off the courtesy lamps if a door lock command is received with all the doors closed, or if the ignition switch is turned to either the ON or RUN position.
The BCM activates the interior lighting output 15 seconds after receiving the class 2 message "Airbags Deployed" from the sensing and diagnostic module (SDM). The interior lamps remain activated for 25 minutes.

The door ajar switch is part of the lock actuator inside the door !

Head lights, interior lights all work. I turn the ignition and everything goes out but as I release the turn they come back on. I checked the fuses replaced the ignition main fuse still have this problem.


Clean the battery terminals, may be a bad connection or the battery is flat.
If you take the terminals off, take off the earth (-) one first and put it on last, this will prevent any shorts that may cause some damage. Use hot water and maybe a little washing soda to clean the terminals. Make sure that none goes into the battery.

My battery has been checked and is fine, but the battery will go dead within approximately 48 hours if the car is not started and run. I checked all of the draw from the battery on each fuse and the #9...


TO CHECK FOR A BATTERY DRAIN. TURN OFF EVERY SWITCH IN THE CAR. CLOSE THE GLOVE COMPARTMENT. MAKE SURE THE LITE IN THERE IS GOING OUT. OPEN THE HOOD CLOSE ALL OF THE DOORS. MAKE SURE ALL OF THE COURTESY LIGHTS ARE GOING OUT. DISCONNECT ANY UNDER HOOD LIGHTS. DISCONNECT NEG. BATTERY CABLE. USE A 12 VOLT TEST LIGHT, FASTEN ONE END TO THE NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL, FASTEN THE OTHER END TO A METAL PART OF THE MOTOR. IF THE LIGHT COMES ON, THERE IS A BATTERY DRAIN. NO LIGHT, NO DRAIN. IF THE LIGHT IS ON, PULL EACH FUSE, BIG & SMALL, ONE AT A TIME, OUT OF THE FUSEBOX THAT IS NEAR THE BATTERY. WHICHEVER FUSE MAKES THE LIGHT GO OUT IS CAUSING THE DRAIN. IF THE LIGHT STAYS ON THROUGHOUT THE FUSE PULLING, DISCONNECT THE ALTERNATOR. IF THERE IS SOMETHING WRONG IN THE ALTERNATOR, IT CAN DRAIN THE BATTERY WHILE SITTING STILL, EVEN THOUGH IT IS CHARGING THE BATTERY WHILE YOU ARE DRIVING. GOOD LUCK

The battery on my 2008 Volkswagen passat keeps draining. I have replaced the alternator and replaced two batteries so far but the problem is still there.


You need to find the source of the drain on the battery. To do this you will need a multimeter set up to read DC current (ammeter from zero to 1amp range). Switch engine off, switch radio off and disconnect the negative lead to the battery terminal. Connect negative lead of ammeter to negative battery lead and the positive lead of the ammeter to the negative battery terminal. With all electrical items switched off the current reading should be very low, no more than just a few milliamps to keep the dashboard clock running etc. If there is an appreciable current flow locate the fuse box and remove and replace each fuse in turn, note any changes in current and note down the fuse(s) that result in the greatest drop when the fuse is removed. Now switch on an interior light (open a door) just to show you how much extra current is drawn from the battery as a result of its coming on. Is this the sort of current being drawn from the battery when the door is closed? Check out that the circuit with the greatest current drain has a legitimate reason for being on (car alarm maybe). If there is no reason for the current draw then find the item left on when it should be off. A classic case is the trunk (boot) light or the glove box light being left on when the lid is closed. These lights are disconnected by contact switches that open (break the electrical circuit)) when when the lid is closed. Checking the trunk light is easy, just climb in and ask a friend to open and close the lid. The car doors too have contact switches by the hinges and these determine when the interior lights come on or off etc. Check all contact switches by pressing them open by hand and registering the current changes with their opening and closing.
