Who can tell me what a po243 error code "wastegate" is? What do I need to do to fix it? Took it to local dealer twice, they wipe the check engine light by the time I get home it is back. Now truck is 1000 miles out of warrenty! Go figure.
A wastegate is a valve that diverts exhaust gases away from the turbine wheel in a turbocharged engine system. Diversion of exhaust gases regulates the turbine speed, which in turn regulates the rotating speed of the compressor. The primary function of the wastegate is to regulate the maximum boost pressure in turbocharger systems, to protect the engine and the turbocharger.
It is not really a minor thing. It may not cause a major problem, but you are very likely loosing power and fuel mileage because of it.

Now I understand what it does, but how do I fix it. Do I need to replace the wasteagte? Can I fix the wastegate?
It appears that I have the same issue. The wastegate is frozen. My local mechanic said i would need to have the entire turbo replaced and that it would cost $2,500. Called a local diesel shop nd they think they can get it unstuck. i ahve also seen aftermarket wastegates. BD Performance makes one. This issue is alos causing my truck to not shift until redline. once they clear the code is shifts fine though until the code appears again.
