Question about 2003 GMC Envoy

1 Answer

2003 Envoy. When I try to get all wheel drive or 4 wheel drive, the lights just flash and then goes back to 2 wheel drive. This vehicle has been in the shop for hours but no one can find the problem! NO codes come up, transfer case was replaced because metal was found in oil. Mechanic's are stumped !! Everything appears to go into gear when told to by the "outside computer" . I am at a loss as to what to try next. Have read all the posts, will check all connections this weekend (again) . Hope you have some advice. ( wife's suv ) Getting mad with the snow on the roads !!!

Lets see--what else can I add ? Yes, this vehicle hadf been through the car was before the problem started but that was 2 months before we noticed the problem. I have tried shifting into AWD and 4WD in neutral and even reverse. According to the machanic's computer---all sencors are working. Vehicle was even taken to GM dealer and they put in all the updates for this suv and that did not help. Their diagnostics could not find the problem. Living in town, AWD is all that is really needed. Would be happy if we could at least get that to work or get the rearend to lock. 2 wheels working is better than 1 ! New actuator motor was also tried. Wiring has all been checked ( for continuaty) to see if there are any breaks, all appear good.

Update---Envoy started to throw out some codes. 6 codes that said 'no comunication'. Wipers were coming on when they felt like it,, heater fan would go to full speed - when ever,, 4x4 still not working Electric fan getting noisy. I have gotten rid of this possessed vehicle. I thank all of you that tried to help. My wife now drives an 07 Buick Rendezvous.

If the transfer case actuator is working correctly, the only other possibility is the front disconnect mechanism. If this part of the 4WD system is not engaging then the Transfer Case Control Module (TCCM) will not allow the system to go into AWD or 4WD. Do yourself a favor and find a mechanic who knows GM 4WD systems.
BTW, operating the truck in AWD is not good for the drivetrain, if you need additional traction, switch to 4WD.

SOURCE: wont shift back from 4x4 low, to 2x2

I also have a 2002 Envoy. Shifting to and from 4wh and 4wa can be done on the fly but shifting to 4wL has to be done stoped and while in neutral. Try that. Otherwise I'm afraid its a new computer for you. Its located under the left rear seat and you need a loan for one.

My 2003 yukon xl does the exact same thing. Sorry that I do not have a solution, but I figure its the same reason the daytime running lights always burn-out. The SUV in general has be an absolute POS and I will never buy another.

The vast majority of vehicles that have 2 wheel and 4 wheel drive will only light up something on the dash when in 4 wheel drive.(They also light up 4 wheel drive low if you have it) I've been driving 4 wheel drives for 25 years and have yet to see one that lights up something for 2 wheel drive.

The Transfer Case Control Module (TCCM) in this model year have been known to hang up, try pulling fuse #48 (4WD) in the rear fuse panel located under the left rear seat. Reinstall fuse and see if everything works OK, if not, you probably need to replace the TCCM.

I HAVE A 2002, 4-WHEEL DRIVE, TOYOTA TUNDRA PICK-UP TRUCK. IT HAS A 4-WHEEL DRIVE PROBLEM. RECENTLY I USED THE 4-WHEEL DRIVE, IN HI-GEAR. IT PERFORMED GREAT. WHEN I DEPRESSED TO BUTTON ON THE DASH TO...

I was researching the recalls for the 2002 tundra and havent found any recall pertaining to the 4whl drive. Sometimes when people have their 4wheel drive locked in and drive on pavement for any length of time, whether it be just a couple of feet or a couple of miles, over time it creates a binding of the gears in your transfer case. Once the bind is so great, the engaging and disengaging starts malfunctioning and leads to bigger problems overall. I could be wrong about this being the problem that you have but I think its something to look into. It wouldnt hurt to put your vehicle up off all fours and release the bind if any by running through the gears while in 2 and rour wheel drive while all four tires can move freely and release. See if that works for you. Check your gear oil front , center and rear and use much caution when attempting this suggestion. Also refer to your owners manual troubleshooting section for other possibilities. Merry Christmas. By the way, the electrical switch should be covered in the troubleshooting section also.

sounds like 1 of 2 problems. without the vehicle it is hard to say but first I would check the ignition switch and then look at the body control module. hope this helps,
The body control module controls keyless entry and most body functions including dash board operations.

Clicking noise when I turn right on 4 wheel drive. now if I put the truck on 2 wheel drive its automatically goes to 4 wheel drive.

Have your right front Constant Velocity (c.v ) Driveshaft check out. Noise goes away on 2 wheel drive is there is no torq on the shaft like there is on 4 wheel drive. Bad c.v.shaft. Hope this was very helpful.
