Question about Cars & Trucks

Our 2000 dodge caravan 3.8 L serpentine belt keeps shifting to one side , we just replaced tentioner and idler pulley after belt shredding and slipping off 4 times over a year and a half after the 4th time my husband put the new belt on and it kept slipping off and that's why we replaced tentioner and idler pulley. Can anyone tell me why it is shifting? By the way we live in washington and it has been raining while my husband did this work but with a tarp over the hood / engine

This can be caused and often is by a defective crankshaft harmonic damper pulley.

There is also a bolt holding a bracket below the idler pulley that was loose , almost out my husband says and he tried to tighten it but its not grabbing... would this have something to do with this problem? Before we go and change the crankshaft harmonic damper pulley

SOURCE: serpentine belt slips off idler pulley

The A/C pully is supposed to spin freely until the AC is activated to run.. The cranshaft pully does not. Replace the tensioner pully. The belt has to fit in between the grooves on the pullys.

SOURCE: serpentine belt slips off

Remove the belt and check all pulleys for side play and wobble...likely you will find one loose (bad bearing) whichever it turns out to be, change it. (likely what killed the belt to begin with.) Also sight down the belt from the side and check that all pulleys are aligned with each other. any variation needs correction. Begin by checking the one you mentioned first.

Serpentine belt keeps walking off 94 dodge caravan 3.0

for a belt to run off the pulleys , one of the pulleys will not be mounted parallel to all the other pulleys
check alternator pulley for alignment, power steering for alignment and tensioner pulleys for alignment
place a long straight edge across the faces of the pulleys to another pulley and see if it touches both side of the pulleys
check the idler pulley for failing bearings that will not allow that pulley to run in line under tension

I have a 98 4x4 dodge Durango it's a 5.2 litter I recently had to replace the serpentine belt now it keeps shredding the serpentine belt what is the problem please help

most likely the idler pulleys ,any chirping or squally noise take the belt off and spin all the pulleys to check for seized components. Also double check routing for protruding bolts or bracket that might rub the belt

How to replace the belt on 2000 dodge caravan

I had to replace the brushes on my 2000 Caravan alternator so I had to remove the serpentine belt. I was able to remove the belt by prying the idler pulley inwards to take of the pressure and slip it off so I think you should be able to do the same thing.

Why would the belt to my van keep shredding or popping off

check all of your pulleys (a/c, idler pulley, water pump, etc...), make sure they all turn by hand and don't seem loose. sounds like you might have one locked up or sticking really badly.

95 Grand Caravan se. Serpentine belt keeps coming off.

When did this first begin to happen? Changed belt or installed different pulley? Chased same problem. Solved it by shimming the idler pulley out so that belt ran in the middle of the pulley. Check the wear marks on the pulleys to see if the belts are running to the outside.

Serpentine belt problem in a dodge grand caravan v6 3.3 l 2000 slept when is raining or wet days

Hello, This was a common problem with these van. So common that gates made a solotion to it. They made a kit that contains a belt with groove on both sides of it. and a tentioner pulley with grooves and also an idler pulley with grooves. This gets rid of the smooth pulleys that the belt can slip off from. I think the kit is about $150 buck and you will have to change them two pulleys, but The belt will never come off again. here is a part # GATES Part # 38379K and link to show you a pic. replace the belt, if that has been done pull the belt off and check the pulley's for proper laignment with a straight edge, if that is ok check for excessive play in the bearings of all the pulleys that belt runs on, pay close attention to the automatic tensioner pulley and arm and the idler pulley's
