Question about 1997 Volkswagen Jetta

1 Answer

97 VW Jetta won't start, no clicking

I parked my car and a few hours later, I turned the key and all the dashboard lights came on and the alarm was going off. The lights seem fine. There is no clicking when I try to turn the key. Help! I don't want to get overcharged at the repair shop. SDfan I left town for a week and when I got back my car would not start. My lights also work fine. I also noticed that the alarm light on the door lock remains flashing when car is unlocked. I checked fuses but all were fine. I tried to disconnect the ground on the battery and reset the computer but it did nothing.

MY 97 Jetta did the same thing. I thought it just needed a jump. My Dad hooked up the jumper cables. Everything lights up, but when you turn the key, nothing happens. No click or anything. Where is the starter?

    Same exact problem.
I parked the car at my place of employment, came to the car later, and it wouldn't start at all. Lights turns on, alarm, no click.
I had a bunch of guys I knew from work look at it and nothing would help.
    I have a 96 Jetta GLS.

It might be starter wiring problem. Look for wire coming to the top part of the starter. One might be not tight enough or went off.
Good Luck

I think unrelated problems, rock steering wheel and try to remove key, perhaps put vehicle in park the drive a few times wouldn't hurt. Then I would disconnect the battery for a few minutes so the security system will reset itself and see if that solves problem.

It would be worth checking/replacing the ignition module ( see if you have a spark when it WON'T start) . Coil assy are plentiful and the most likely given your description. Very prone to over heating and shutting down. Good luck

Connect the battery and press the button on the key fob. If that does not work, try starting the car.
