SOURCE: how do I change the starter on a 96 sebring coupe

Are you sure it is the starter? This is a picture of where the starter relay is....may be easier and cleaner to change this first....unless it is your starter...none-the-less....here is the info....and not sure the size of motor so pick accordingly:

RELAY REPLACEMENT

See Figure 15
On Cirrus, Stratus, Sebring convertible and Breeze models, the starter relay is located in the Power Distribution Center (PDC) in the engine compartment. Refer to the underside of the PDC cover for starter relay location.
On Sebring and Avenger coupes, the starter relay is located under the instrument panel, behind the instrument panel/center console panel. It may only be necessary to remove the center console panel to access the starter relay. However, if the entire console requires removal, refer to .

The starter is located on the front of the engine, right above the front motor mount and between the catalytic converter and the engine block.

Replacing a starter in a sebring 2006

All of the nuts and bolts are metric on it. It helps to use a 13mm swivel socket on the starter bolts but you can use a wrench if you need to. Also, a 7/8 open end wrench for the 02 sensor, or an 02 sensor socket.

Let me give you the steps for the starter and also the front engine mount bracket. You don't have to remove the entire mount, just the bracket

REMOVAL

  1. Open Hood.
  2. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  3. Raise vehicle and support.
  4. Disconnect the electrical connector from the 02 sensor.

  • Remove the 02 sensor from the exhaust manifold .
  • Remove the front mount through bolt.
  • Remove the front mount bracket from engine block.

How many starter relays on a 96 VW Jetta. I changed the one under the dash and it is still not starting. I changed the starter. You can hear the relay click but it doesn't turn over.

It might be ignition switch , they do go bad a lot on this cars.
Try to turn key all the way to the limit and still give it some push when you try to start the engine.
If it starts , you need new ignition switch.
