My brand new battery is dead every morning. but a I can hear the alternator turn on. THere is a wire coming off the Hot terminal of the battery that is pulling a lot of juice. Im looking for a diagram

Large wire is possible hot wire to altenator. Should have B+ voltage at all times. Need to do an amperage draw test and start eliminating sub systems to determine root cause. Also would like to point out a new battery does not mean defective free. would load test to ensure no dead cells first.

If the altenator shows good, what would cause a new battery to go dead over night?

An open circuit, ( an electrical short ), could cause it.

A bad connection at the battery terminals could cause it, not only can a bad connection prevent the vehicle from starting, it also prevents the alternator from putting a charge back in to the battery.

Often the battery cable clamps can crack on the bottom side and prevent the clamps from being tight enough for a good connection.

Also, very common in cold weather, even with a brand new battery, the new battery may not have the minimum cold cranking amps, ( MCCA ), to start an engine in the cold weather. You may want to make sure, if you already haven't, that your battery meets the manufacturer's MCCA requirement.

I hope this helps you.

I have had a 1982 280zx since jan. of 2009 the

Are you over tightening the belt? If I remember correctly, you should have 1/4" belt deflection after you tighten it.

Check the factory service manual:

Hope this helps!

87 maxima will not turn over battery has full charge car has been sitting for 7 years

A few options,
1, starter seized, remove fromcar and oil it, turning the spindle with grips or similar.
2, starter jammed, tap with a mallet or hammer, if it has a square "nut" on the back of the motor, turning this will ease the jamming.
3, engine seized, put a spanner on the crank shaft pulley and try to turn the engine, if a petrol engine, remove the sparkplugs to make it easier. Or put the car in gear (2nd) and rock the car back and forth to free the engine, this also frees the starter and brakes if they are stuck.

Your brakes have seized. Remove the wheels and inspect. A firm blow with a rubber mallet to the calliper or a little penetrating oil may free them up, but not adviseable to drive until looked at after freeing up.

well for starters your altenator is bad because what it is dolinging is over charging the battery hence why it boiled off the water/acid in the battery. the regulater is intergrated into the altenator. there is not a short because numberone your car would not start and two your battery would explode. i never test a battery or altenator at a store like napa or Oreilly's because they are not mechanics ......they are parts guys. your altenator should charge the battery at no more than 14 volts and the average is 13.5 volts. you need to replace the altenator the reason why you are losing a charge is be cause as the car is running the battery is being discharged because the regulator is defective in the altenator. please rate this thanks
