I have a 2002 explorer V6, the service engine light was on and i had a shake when idling, I changed out the coil pack and that made the service engine light go off and the shake went away for a couple days. The service engine light came back on and i the idle shake returned. Then the other day I was drving (about 70 mph) and the car suddenly throttled down and slowed to 55 then continued to decrease in speed to about 20 mph. Then no matter how had i hit the gas it won't go past 15-20 mph. When i am in park or nuetral and try to rev the engine it revs to aout 2300 rpms and stops. I havent changed the spark plugs in a while i am hoping its that simple but fear it may not be. Any one know what else it could be?????

Original owner let it run low on fluid because of leak. ... The worn bores will cause slipping, hard shifts, and high revs between shifts from those gears. ..... Andy I bought a 02 mercury mountaineer v6 4.0 the the O/D flashes and service light is on ... Get on a flat surface at highway speeds and manually turn the OD of and on.
What engine do you have? is check engine light on? You said you changed coil pack, but what about spark plugs? could be fouled by normal wear, improper application/plug gap, oil fouling (oil residue on electrode) caused by bad valve guide seals or bad piston rings or gas fouling(electrode wet with gas) caused by bad plug, wire, injector, O-2 sensor. Could be caused by a vacuum leak (hose or intake manifold/gasket) Check all vacuum hoses for cracking/chaffing, repair as needed. with engine idling spray carburetor cleaner at base of intake manifold watch for rpm increase if so there is a vacuum leak. Could be stuck open egr valve, Could be compression problem or timing chain problem. This is the best I can do with info you provided. Hope it helps.
So am I to assume that this is a 3.0L V6 vehicle? Does the engine run OK or does it exhibit a rough idle and poor performance? When you say 123 misfire.. do you mean it had codes P0301, P0302,& P0303 in the pcm codes? If these codes are still there and the engine is running poorly, then you still have a misfire on these cylinders.. it may have not been ignition related. Fuel problems and compression problems can also contribute to a misfire. You may need to take vehicle to a reputable shop and have it diagnosed by them.
Try shaking the ICM connector see if it effects engine operation if it does inspect for looseness and poor terminal contact, these have a know connection problem especially 1,3,6 connections these are known as (COP) coil on plug
What do you mean by it "shakes & cuts out while driving"? The vehicle literally shakes, or just the engine shakes at an idle or while driving? and it cuts out when, at idle, driving? Let me know when specifically it has this problem, it might help me on giving you a better suggestion(s) on what problem(s) might be causing this.
