98 lincoln navigator both brake lights r not working? What's the first step

Are the bulbs good ? Check the power feed to the brake light switch ,then with the brake pedal pressed check for power (voltage ) out of the brake light switch ! Do you have a test light or voltmeter ? Do you know what an where the brake light switch is ? If you look up under the dash on top of the brake pedal arm you will see a plastic thing with wires an connectors going to it , that's it . may have two or a combination switch ! Brake lights , ABS signal , cruise control etc....You need a wiring diagram to figure out which wires you want to test !
Symptom Chart Condition Possible Sources Action
  • The stoplamps are inoperative
  • CJB Fuse 13 (15A).
  • Circuitry.
  • BPP switch.
  • GO to Pinpoint Test K .

does the 3rd brake light in the back window work? check fuses if fuses are OK and the hazard lights work, then the turn signal switch may be bad. I dont know what your sons suburban (trailer?)has to do with your navigator?

I have the air bag light ''on'' on my lincoln navigator 2000.

Remove clips from battery and then check carefully all the air bag sensors i.e under driver seat or passenger seat. Best way is a computer diagnose to find the right cause from car's ecu.

I can't move my gearshift

THIS IS CAUSED BY EITHER A SHORTED BRAKE LIGHT CIRCUIT WITH A RESULTING BLOWN FUSE, OR MORE LIKELY A DEFECTIVE BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH, THE SYSTEM HAS WHAT IS CALLED A PART LOCK OUT, THIS SYSTEM HAS TO SENSE THE BRAKE PEDAL IS PRESSED BEFORE U CAN SHIFT OUT OF PARK, IT DOES THIS BY USING THE 12 VOLT SIGNAL FROM THE BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH TO RELEASE A SMALL SOLENOID ON THE TOP OF THE STEERING COLUMN.
