Question about 1998 Volkswagen Jetta
The latch on my drivers side door is broken and the door will not close. The latch itself does not stay in the down position when you close the door like the spring is broken. I have the entire module out of the door. Where do you get another one for under $100.

i had this problem too and it turned out the piece that the door handle attaches to broke. i glued and taped up mine and it works fine now. its worth a look if the WD40 thing doesn't work.

One thing... If your last 3 doors works fine it's mean that problem is only in your drivers side. In VW like nickalxjoe wrote is air pump. So there might be an air leaking which you can hear. So if you can hear from where air running out try to fix this first.

according to my partsman (who has had great advice for many years), you do not have to remove the door panel to replace the door handle which contains the cylinder lock. the handle is released with a screw which you can see when you open the door. you will need a starhead screwdriver or socket. A new handle costs around $40 at a parts store in my area. call around for a locksmith who will re-key your key to the new lock or use the key which comes with the new lock, your choice. i am in dealing with this also

The problem you are experiencing is the drivers side interior light switch is not working. This is usually found in the door latch on later model cars and usually requires the complete latch mechanism changing. However it would pay to check that your car doesn't have a pin switch fitted in the pillar.Unfortunately I think you have the former.
