Speedo will not work with new sensor fitted

Speedo hasn't worked for some time, was told it was the sensor on gear box. At the onset of problem the speedo would work intermitently and then died. Is there a seperate fuse for the speedo or is it run of the main power fuse. Could you help please.

Regards
Shayne.

If you haven't installed or bought a new sensor, then have an auto electrucian checkout the ols sensor first, the check for this is really simple and is listed in the 80 series manual. if the sensor is faulty then buy a new one if the sensor is ok then you have to check the integrity of the electric connection (wiring) to the instrument then if that is ok then check the instrument, for the previous solution suggested- There is no Bloody speedo cable as in a turning one only electrical.

If you can try take off the dash and remove the dash unit and check to see if the speedo cable is attatched properly

There is a gear that drives the sensor gear much like the old speedo cable gear.
If you connected the sensor and the check engine light went off, chances are the sensor is working.

does the speed change at all? does the speedometer if you noticed is working? if the speedo is not working then the problem is your speed sensor on the gear box is not working and that is the reason the automatic transmission stayed on safe mode. renew the speedo and will work ok.

Speedo works intermitently 99 outback legacy

I had to replace my vehicle speed sensor in my 98 Legacy GT. you can unscrew it from the transmission and hook it up to a drill to spin it and it will show the RPM's on the speedo, but it could be the sensor or the speedo head. The sensors are around $120, and having a speedo repaired can be a few hundred at the max. It's most likely the vehicle speed sensor only because that is usually the problem nine times out of ten. I hope this info helps.

you might want to check the speedo drive gears at the transmission and make sure they are in good shape and the gear that drives the electrical portion is spinning freely as any damage here will cause intermittent speedo operation.also if this is an electrically sent speedo from the tranny check the electrical connections.there is also a speedo buffer in the dash that rarely goes bad but is still a possibility.and lastly it could be the speedometer head thats the problem.when the speedo stops working does the odometer still work.if so then the problem is in the speedo head.i don`t remember which ones or what year they changed them but some you could just replace the speedo head and not the whole cluster assembly.

Sensor most likely. It's located on the tailshaft of the 700. You might check for wiring damage starting at the sensor and working towards the wiring bundle it goes to.

Speedo works intermitantly drops to zero milage disappears

The VSS is a hall effect switch. It is nothing more than a magnet that is close to a series of gaps on a rotating portion of the trans. Every time a high point passes through the magnetic field, it creates a pulse that the computer reads. The computer then calculates the MPH. Remove the VSS and clean it first before getting a new one. If that does not work, replace it.

Hope this helps

Most likely to be the Bitron speedo interface behind the glove box, I replaced all the diodes, capacitors and both chips on mine (electronic expert), though you could have dry joints on the back of the dash or the road speed sensor on the back of the gearbox.
