Question about 1999 GMC Jimmy

1 Answer

Won't start I have a 1999 GMC Jimmy, I just had the fuel pump changed recently and now its hard to start. The only way I can get it to start is if I let the ignition on the ON position for approximately 10 min. and then it will start, it will run all day if I don't shut it off. The minute I shut it off I have to do the same thing again, let the ignition on the ON position and start it. Someone told me it has to do with the security system, and that it could be bypassed but I don't know where to start to look, I don't wont to cut the wrong wire. Thank you Carl

What made you replace the fuel pump? Sounds to me like your fuel psi regulator is not working properly and causing the fuel to drain back in the tank after you shut it off. The next time you go to start it cycle the key on 3 or 4 times do not start it unil after the 3rd time and when you cycle it to the on position let it sit for 5seconds each time and see will it start

Sounds like you are loosing fuel pressure overnight. Since it takes 70+ psi to start and run, if you have zero pressure in the morning, it would take a long time of cranking to get the pressure back up.
If it is low or no pressure, the problem could be a faulty check valve in the fuel pump.

Yes, the crank shaft position sensor tells the engine when to send fuel and spark to the cylinders in conjunction with the camshaft position sensor. If the crank sensor isn't working properly, the engine doesn't know when do do anything. Depending on what the other codes where, I'd highly suspect the CPS. It's not terribly hard to get at nor expensive of a part, but you will need a diagnostic scanner capable of doing a Crankshaft Learn procedure.

Changed fuel pump and still won't start

Have you checked the fuel pressure at the injector ? It has to be at least 60psi for the engine to start.

Check fuel pressure regulator.Start engine hook fuel gauge to fuel line check pressure ready then pull the vacuum hose of the fuel regulator if pressure rises 5-10 psi then its good.
