try haynes.com or your local parts store for a Haynes manual. For around $20 they are frequently as good or better for home mechanic than factory manuals for $100.

The ASR (acceleration slip regulation) light is for the ETA (electronic throttle actuator) it is a mysterious beast that controls throttle placement. I would say that you have one of two problems. Either the interior insulation of the wiring of the ETA is is crumbling or the wiring harness is disintegrating. Either fix isn't cheap although if I had to pick one I'd pick the wiring harness. It's about a third of an ETA. In short check he wiring to the ETA, look for damage or water intrusion, if nothing is found you will have to replace the ETA control.

For two years I lived with the the ASR light coming on shortly after starting the car and had to either continue driving it in the limp home mode, or stop the car to restart it to regain normal engine operation with the ASR light out. Finally, it got so bad I simply took a chance, after discussing the problem with a reputable local indie, and bought a rebuilt ETA from Potomac German Auto and put it in. The part had a one year warranty with it and was about half the cost of a new unit from MB. There are other companies out there that rebuild these units as well. At any rate the ASR problem went away. To give you a reference point, my car had about 156,000 miles on it when I did this repair. That may or may not be significant to your situation, and I probably should have corrected this problem well before I did, but I didn't.

Hi. You need to clean the Mass Air Flow Sensor.
This is an easy job.
Get a can of throttle body or brake cleaner spray at your local auto parts store.
Open the hood, and locate the air filter box. follow the tube from the filter box towards the engine. Look for a small black box with 2 screws holding it to the air tube, Remove the wire connector and observe inside the sensor with a flashlight. You will see 2 small wires, and they will appear fuzzy or dirty. Spray the interior with the cleaner until the wires are nice and clean. Do not use compressed air, you will damage the sensor. Put it all back together and drive it.
This will def fix your issue. This is a vey common problem. If you do it yourself, you will save 70 + bucks.
Thanks for choosing FixYa, and a FIxYa rating for my assistance would be greatly appreciated.

yes here is the common problem
Here is the most common cause of surges and stalls and low idle rough idle, it is the idle speed control air-bypass valve and throttle valve (IAC for short), they get full of gunk over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.
