I have the same problem in my 2001 towncar. I removed the switch control panel (without removing the door panel) by prying up from the front of the panel. There's a spring loaded plug under the mirror adjustment. Once you get that pulled up, the whole unit will lift out. Since there's a two year difference in the models - it MAY not work... however, you might not have to remove the whole door panel as you think.
In my case, the wiring was bad.

The sound is the motor turning the winding cylinder for the regulator (the module which contains the steel cables which lift and lower the window) with a cable broken. Only solution is to replace the regulator. Not too difficult but somewhat tedious to do.

If you are going to do this yourself, get your camera and take pictures of each step before you do it. Referring to a workshop manual will be an immense help.

The door panel is held on by screws and plastic ribbed posts which stick into "grabbers." The door pull/handhold has plastic covers on each end. Gently squeeze these covers toward their middle to push the gripping cleats away from the edges. Using a pair of vice grips and setting the opening just enough to squeeze but not crush works best. Do not pry off with a screwdriver or you will have to replace the cover. Screws are behind these covers.

The window control panel pulls forward and up to remove. Pry carefully, gently. Do not force the plastic around the door handle. It does not need to come off. The foam rubber behind the handle moves around. Reset it when you put the door panel back on. Once all the screws are out, pull sharply along the edges of the door panel until the panel snaps off. If you break the plastic pins which hold the door in place, use 2 part epoxy to rebind them. Take the window control unit out of the door panel- don't disconnect, just twist to side through the opening. Slide the door panel toward the front of the car to clear the door handle. Gently.

Set the door panel aside. The inside of the door is covered with a thin foam plastic sheet. Carefully pull this back, removing it if you can, peeling it back if you can't. You will need to use some spray adhesive to stick it back in place when you close up the panel. Remove the radio speaker- stick the screws on the magnet on the back of the speaker. Pull the wires off the speaker carefully. Set it aside where it won't be holed by accident.

The wiring harnesses are held in place by plastic serrated pins fitted into holes in the door. Snap/pry them out carefully. The wires are wrapped with plastic electrical tape. If you pull hard and the pins come unstuck from the wires, simply retape them in place. A photo is good to help remember how to put the wires back in place.

Remove the plastic window frame on the bottom of the window- pry it up with a thin tool like a dry wall compound spreader (narrow one,) Set it aside.

You are now faced with a multitude of rivets. The easiest way to get them out is to drill out the center, widening the center hole as you do. You don't have to drill the hole completely as wide as the rivet, just enough to get the center out. Then place a chisel beneath the rivet head and hit it with a hammer to cut the head off the rivet. The rivet is aluminum and will cut off easily it the hole is bored out well (a little oversize hole helps.) The inside portion of the rivet will fall into the door. Pick them out or they will rattle later.) To repIace the rivets, I use a small bolt set which Harbor Freight company sells. There are enough bolts and nuts in it (approx 1/8 in or 5 mm-I think) to replace the rivets nicely. it is a small box of various sized bolts/nuts. Any short (1/2 inch) bolt and nut which fits the holes will work.

Remove all the rivets. Take out the screws holding the motor to the regulator. Photograph or mark how the triangular plate fits into the door and where the motor is oriented. It is easy to put the motor back on in the wrong position. The upper portion of the regulator is held on by two rivets at the top of the door. Once they are removed the holder which connects the upper part of the regulator is free. You cannot get the regulator out without taking the window out of the door. Stand facing the door edge and put your hands on opposite sides of the window glass. Manipulate it, rotate it, etc until you can pull it out. Be careful! Break the glass and you have to go to a junkyard or glass shop.

Pull out the motor and regulator. Note how they fit together. Put new regulator in same position. It you are not very, very careful with the new regulator, you can unwind the cables on it and they are a real pain to get right again. (The cables are counter wound so when one goes out the other winds in.) I usually put a piece of wire into the holes to lock the wires in place until I can fit the motor on it. Put the regulator into the door. Put the motor and the triangular plate into the door opening and set them in place on the regulator. You will have to figure out how the pieces go together inside the door- the access is limited and space is tight. Here is where a photo of the unit before it was uninstalled is valuable. You might have to put it in and out more than once to get it in right. Next replace rivets with small bolts and nuts with lock washers. Small hands help (but it is'nt a one person job.) Forceps also are an aid. You have to find the best way to get the nuts on for you. I used tape on the bolts on the top of the door to hold them in place until I could fit the frame in place and get the bolts and washers on.

When you have the regulator and motor in place- DO NOT TIGHTEN ALL THE BOLTS until you fit the window in place. It needs to move against the regulator and the guides to go into place. Then you can tighten up all the bolts.

Turn on ignition and test window. If in place properly (don't forget to put the bottom window frame back on and tap it into place) the window should slide up and down without binding. If it binds, is slow, hesitates, jerks, squeals or in other ways doesn't act normally, get back into the door and see where it is installed wrongly (I got the first regulator I put in all fouled up and had to buy another and install it!) Now when all is smooth, tighten up all nuts and screws.

Put the plastic shield into place and position but to not push into place the wiring support pins. Pull back the plastic and spray the back of the plastic with adhesive spray- Use good quality spray from auto store, not hobby stuff. Push, pull, stretch plastic until it fits. Reinstall wiring, radio speaker, etc. Be sure you have ventilation, the adhesive solvents are not to be breathed- Any pulmonary problem, wear a high quality face mask with cheek filters.

Wait until adhesive is dry before putting door back together. Put window control panel up through opening but do not snap into place. Position panel using plastic pins for placement. Push, pound with heel of hand, the panel until it snaps in place. It should go in nicely without a lot of force. Repace screws. (the screws inside the door pocket do not hold anything except the padded cover in place.) Check fit.

Place window control panel in place and snap it in. Replace covers over screws on door handhold- they might have to be spread a little to make sure they click into place- especially if they are cold (warm them up if they are stiff.)

You are done.

Depending on how fast you cut the rivets and unscrewed the regulator assembly, this is 4-5 hour job for the first timer. Take your time, get it right. Don't do it when you are tired or you will break something. Use epoxy to fix plastic parts. If its under the door panel, elegance doesn't matter, function does.

Some year models of MKZ, maybe other Ford products too have problem with windows going down when the lock button is pressed on the ignition key. These models have a safety feature that when you press and hold for two second one of the buttons (look in your manual) on the ignition key the windows and sunroof will open. I was told by the dealer there is a problem with the receiver in car.

Sounds like the window track fell off the window regulator. Sometimes you can replace the roller that goes between regulator & motor, but most times you will need to replace window regulator. Take off interior door panel & see which option is possible.

Have you tried the drivers door "passenger door window switch" and the passenger "door window switch" to try and roll the passenger window up?When you do try to roll it up make sure the vehicle is running as you want the most voltage to the window motor.If both door switches would not roll the window up,try the following.
With the engine running hit the up window switch on the passenger door just as you give the door a HARD FIRM RAP.The window should roll up.It may take a few tries.DO NOT roll the window back down until you have changed or dissembled the window motor for a good cleaning.Also,check for broken wires at the door hinge area on both the drivers and passenger sides,pull each wire firmly looking for a broken wire.

1995 Ford Taurus front passenger window went down and won't roll up


Remove the switch panel and check to see there is 12V power there.. If there is Push the switch and see if the power comes out of it to drive the motor, if the power is not present check the wire back looking for the short.. usually if the power is missing none of the windows will work. look where the wires come out the door post to the door. look at fuses, If there is power and it does not come through the switch when you push the switch. the switch might be bad. in which case jump the switch to roll window up and buy a new switch (rock auto.com) if you apply 12v power and the window still will not go up.. you will need to replace the motor. not a hard job. you must remove door panel and remove regulator and motor and replace and reinstall. either junk yard part, craigslist part or new at Rock auto.. 2004 Explorer power window, strange problem.


my passenger window would only go up. Found broken white wire in the harness on the Driver side .I slit the rubber boot carefully to expose all the wires, It stuck out like a sore thumb.The broken white wire was bigger than most of the other wires going thru the harness. Spliced back together now it all works fine

Check for broken wires inside the rubber boot from the body to the driver door . Happens all; the time ,wires breaking . Also you should have check for B+ voltage at the master switch before replacing .

Power Window: If it's a power window check to see if there is power coming from the window switch with a test light or multimeter. If power is coming from the switch, look in the door where it pivots and check to see if any wires are cracked or broken. If there is no borken wires, then it's possible that the power window motor is not working. If you hear the power window motor working or operating it's possible the window regulator is broken or binded up
Manual Window: If it's a manual window, take the door panel off and check the regulator (part where the window is attached) and looked for any signs that the cable in the part has come free or binded up. Try to roll window up and down to find any signs of the broken cable. If that is the case, then you need a window regulator.

How do I raise a window up if no power to the window motor


remove the power window switch and run a jumper wire to the TAN wire ground to the BLACK wire then if the switch is working roll the window up if the problem is the switch then jump power to the light/blue wire and ground to the white wire to roll up the driverside window , switch them to roll window down, power to brown/white and ground to violit and the passangerside window will roll up, switch them to roll it down.

THERE CAN BE SEVERAL DIFFERENT ISSUES THAT WILL CAUSE THIS PROBLEM. 1. DID THEY ALL STOP WORKING AT THE SAME TIME? 2.IF THEY DID, I WOULD CHECK FOR A BROKEN WIRES IN THE WIRE HARNESS BETWEEN THE DRIVERS DOOR AND FENDER AREA. YOU CAN SEE THIS HARNESS WHEN YOU OPEN THE DOOR. KEEP ONE FINGER ON THE WINDOW BUTTON GOING DOWN AND THE OTHER HAND ON THE WIRE HARNESS AND WIGGLE IT UP, DOWN, IN AND OUT. IF THE WINDOW MOVES THE HARNESS NEEDS TO BE REPAIRED. IF THAT DOESN'T WORK TRY- 3. DEFECTIVE MASTER WINDOW SWITCH. IF THAT DOESN'T WORK TRY- 4. ASK THE DEALER IF THIS CAR HAS A GEM OR BODY CONTROL MODULE THAT HAS TO BE RELEARNED.

Passanger window doesn't go up or down. Is there something I could check, or are both windows powered by the same fuse? Drivers side works.


The same fuse powers all the windows. You either have a bad switch, power window motor or a broken wire. You could try jumping the switch out. If that works you know the switch is bad. If it doesn't then the door panel would have to be removed and power checked at the connector. If you have power but no window operation then the window motor is bad and needs to be replaced. If you have no power at the window motor with the switch jumped then you have a broken wire, most likely in the door jam.

check to see if your getting power to the switch if so try to jump power to the wire going to the motor bypassing the switch if the motor works replace the master switch in the drivers door

98 Lincoln TC,Cold starts fine ,runs good until warm, then shuts off. No codes,Cranks ok, have spark, PATS ok. No fuel pressure, cant hear fuel pump prime,New Fuel relay. jumped fuel pump - works. I do not hear fuel pump prime up, do not have fuel gauge, but pressing on valve in fuel rail- no pressurized fuel. Fuel regulator seems ok, not leaking / vacuum line dry as a bone. If I let it set for 15 min , it will start up again, but for a few minutes then dies out. If I let it set overnight it starts up perfectly and runs until operating temp is reached then stalls/stumbles, and shuts down. Vacuum is good while cranking, even with no start, Checked Inertia switch in trunk, it is not tripped. I have seen Ford TSB summaries' that mention issues like this , but I am not able to see to description. A point to add, the MAF sensor was cleaned, then I decided to replace it and did not make a difference. I do not have any stored codes, and the PATS is working fine, typical 2 second flash from and once key is inserted a 3 second steady light, then disappears. I have seen the TSB mentioning C103 Connector, it looks fine, I swapped out fuel pump relay with ac relay, still no difference.mention of wires around battery, do not know where to start. in dash service engine light and odometer is normal, seen other posts the say they only have lines, but mine is ok. the start of all of this , I washed engine with regular garden hose, ( not using pressure washer).also in the mean time, rear window defroster stopped working as well, can not say for same reason, but a mention.My problem started after washing engine. this is one of four Panther platform vehicles I owned with exact 4.6l w code engine, which I rinced down before. The only sensor I can think of is Oil pressure , or a corroded wire
