While on the interstate, pulling my small cargo trailer, my 1998 5.7 Silverado, starts shaking, engine light flashing, I stop and read the codes, and get, P0309, P0704, P186, what does these mean?

You have miss read or typed 2 of the codes P0309 = PO309 = Cylinder 9 Misfire Detected, P186 = nothing, P1860 = TCC PWM Solenoid Circuit Electrical, PO186 = Fuel Temp Sensor ''B''. The one you may have got right P0704 = PO704 = Clutch Pedal Position Switch Circuit.

It is running ruff

did you disconnect the battery when you changed the starter? are there any codes stored? like james stated if it was starter related it would have happened right after but I also can't think of a starter causing any problems beyond not starting. if no codes I would check plugs, could be bad gas, and make sure all connectors are plugged in from when the car was worked on , something might have came loose or possibly broke.

Check out the preheater for the choke circuit. It closes the choke to give a rich mixture at cold start.

My 1998 ford explorer runs ruff it idles at about 500- 700 rpm real ruff and driving it is ruff and very jerky no codes come up [email protected]

The computer is the only thing that will not throw a code since it cannot tell on itself, but have you checked to see if there is water in the fuel? Seafoam is a good product to use to try and displace any water in the fuel. I am not saying to do this, but... on my offroad car (not for street legal use*) I pour one bottle of the 90% isopropyl alcohol in the tank with as low of a tank of gas as possible, and it usually does the trick. Water in the fuel will do pretty much exactly as you are describing, so it might be worth it to try one of those suggestions, hopefully someone with one of these trucks will be able to shine some light on the subject, good luck

Idle on start up is ruff oncei drive it is ok?

Anytime the check engine light is on, you should check the computer for trouble codes. The codes will point you in the direction of the problem and what to troubleshoot.

Starts but runs ruff then dies

Hi Glean, Sounds as if you have a problem with the fuel pump or possibly the air flow sensor. Take the vehicle for a scan and if no fault codes show up suspect the pump. Regards John
