Question about 1998 Ford Explorer

My 1998 Ford Explorer is running rough. It feels like it's hesitating or skipping, especially until it warms up. At the same time it hesitates you can hear a loud sound coming from underneath the

I've taken my explorer to the mechanic recently because it is hesitating pretty roughly upon acceleration. At the same time, you can hear a loud clicking sound coming from the middle beneath the car. It gets better when the car warms up and usually goes away until the next time you try to drive it cold. The mechanic said it doesn't happen long enough for them to figure out what it wrong...but SOMETHING is wrong. Please advise.

Try running some fuel injector cleaner through your fuel tank. What you may have are a couple of plugged or missfiring fuel injectors. I would suggest checking all of your wiring to your injectors to insure good connection, replace your fuel filter and check for vacuum leaks.

SOURCE: My 1998 Ford Explorer runs rough under hard acceleration

New plugs and wires?

Double check to make sure that you've got the routing and firing order right... if you have 2 switched, the car may still idle well but then pop and sputter on harder acceleration.

The next step would be to run some "Complete Fuel System Cleaner"... If that's the problem, you should see results within 20 miles or so.

According to the Gates Timing belt guide this is an interference engine. Have a compression test performed to see if any of the cylinders are down. It may have bent valves or other engine damage if the old belt skipped teeth. Otherwise the new belt may not have been lined up correctly. Take the car to a reputable mechanic and have the cam timing checked and also the compression test done

You state you changed plugs and wires - Do distributor cap & rotor? If not you should then set timing. That should cure hesitation (might change fuel filter also and run good fuel system cleaner through it)
Prob 2 - sounds like a u-joint or possible brake pad/rotor issue. Does the squeal only happen in mornings when cold? Sometimes after sitting overnight, rotors get condensation and when backing out they'll squeal/grind. Somethings to look at...

You have a hesitation. A hesitation is cause be either:
1. bad spark plug
2. bad spark plug wire
3. bad or leaky or plugged injector
4. timing is off
5. leaky vacuum hose

Hesitation , skipping, engine cuts out when accelerating

Im having the same issue I believe. I have a 94\' Chevy 1500 and when i accelerate it will jerk like the gas has cut out but it wont stall. It just jerks and slows me down. It only seems to do it when going up a hill. I feel like it could be the fuel pump or possibly some intake gaskets?
